Since the Middle Ages, Berge has belonged to the "bacon belt" of Gevelsberg and belonged to the Volmarstein Office as an independent municipality . It is located in the northeast area of ​​Gevelsberg.

history

The first written mention from today's municipal area was that of the owner of the Rocholz family in 1367. In 1486 13 taxable farms were named. Originally the area was called Berckenberger Burschop , which was renamed the municipality of Berge in the 18th century.

At least from 1760 to 1968 Berge had its own school.

Industrialization began around 1760 with the establishment of hammer mills. The motorway connection to the A1 was completed in the 1960s.

Berge was incorporated into Gevelsberg as part of the municipal territorial reform on January 1st, 1970 (5.17 km² by 5.74 km²) .

Today Berge consists of the districts Berge-Heck and Berge-Knapp and a small number of farms. Berge is mainly characterized by residential developments. Gut Berge (also known as Gut Wehberg) is best known for its stallion station and horse breeding . These are closely associated with the Warendorf State Stud. The Gut Berge Golf Club is also located on Gut Berge . In addition, the former moated castle Gut Rocholz belonged to Berge until it was incorporated . At the Niederbröking farm and near the Wehberg estate, the first traces of human presence were found in the Gevelsberg area (ax blades from the Neolithic Age).

The Berge-Knapp district was built on in the 1970s with some high-rise buildings from Bauverein Gevelsberg eG and other builders. Today around 2,700 people live there. The district has the S-Bahn stop Knapp on the S-Bahn Rhein Ruhr - S8 its own S-Bahn connection. A popular excursion destination is the artificially dammed Berger See. The new municipal cemetery of the city of Gevelsberg is located on the edge of the Berge-Knapp district. The old Berger cemetery is in Berge-Heck.
