The federal highway 234 (abbreviation: B 234 ) is a nearly thirteen kilometer long federal highway in North Rhine-Westphalia . It begins in the urban area of Sprockhövel and ends in Wetter (Ruhr) .

The federal road 234 begins at the Sprockhövel junction of the A 43 and runs on the route of the former B 51 via Sprockhövel-Haßlinghausen to Gevelsberg - Silschede . Shortly afterwards, the L 527 branches off from the B 234 and connects it to the A 1 via the Volmarstein junction . The route continues to Wetter-Volmarstein with the districts of Grundschöttel and Oberwengern. The B 234 crosses the Ruhr in Oberwengern and finally joins the B 226 in Wetter (Ruhr) itself .

The federal road 234 originally led from Unna via Aplerbeck , Herdecke , Hagen and Schwelm to Barmen . Due to the spatial proximity and the parallel course to the A1 , large parts of the B 234 were downgraded to the state road .
The B 234 is based on an Built in 1788-1789 Chaussee , the most important cities in the county Mark joined directly. The former middle part between Herdecke and Wetter (Ruhr) was built around 1820.
