History / other

The federal highway 502 was realized in the course of the Olympic Games in 1972 to better connect the towns east of the Kiel Fjord. A six-lane bridge over the Schwentine was implemented as a major construction project. In the further course it was realized up to the intersection B 202 and B 430 in Lütjenburg as a bypass of the villages in the hinterland of the Baltic Sea coast. At the end of the 1990s, the section Schönberger Strand - Lütjenburg was downgraded to the L165.

In the Kiel city area, the B 502 bears the street name Ostring up to the Schwentine Bridge, where it merges into Schönkirchener Strasse up to the city limits.

Initial plans envisaged leading the expanded route through Kiel-Dietrichsdorf close to Mönkeberg , Heikendorf and Brodersdorf . The new building was delayed for a long time due to environmental concerns and an agreement was finally reached at the end of the 1990s on an expansion with an extension via Schönkirchen . The reason for this were biotopes such as the Mönkeberger See , which were located in the originally planned route.

The new line merges with the old B 502 near Lutterbek . The northern end of the main road is near Schönberg.

In the southern course of the B 502 in the city of Kiel, a controversial bypass of the districts of Gaarden and Ellerbek through the local recreation areas Tröndelsee and Langsee has been planned for decades , including an extension as a variant of the so-called Gaardener Querspange to the B 404 / A 21 . There it should flow into the old B 4 . A connection between the A 215 and A 21 via a new Molfsee feeder road is also planned, as the B 76 is reaching its capacity limit. This would create an intersection-free stretch from the Schwentine to the A 215. So far the B 502 begins at the B 76 , which is called Theodor-Heuss-Ring at this point .
