Mönkeberg is first mentioned in the 13th century. It remained a farming village with fewer than 200 inhabitants until the end of the 19th century. Then there was an influx of workers and employees of the developing Kiel shipbuilding industry as well as members of the navy of the Reich war port of Kiel. In 1908 a permanent road to Kiel was built and it was connected to the power grid around 1914.

In the 1930s, underground oil tanks were built in Mönkeberg to refuel warships , making the area one of the main targets of the Allied air raids during World War II . 95 percent of all buildings were destroyed by the end of the war. After the reconstruction, the suburb and residential character of the place increased.
