Martin Luther Chapel

Around 1900 the services were held, initially only in the winter months - later all year round, on the first Sunday of the month in the village school . Due to the political and economic situation , the planned church building did not take place and Bible lessons continued to be held at irregular intervals in the surrounding villages . It was not until 1945 that the plan to build a place of worship was revived by the influx of refugees . Finally, the Giekau parish was able to acquire a building site including a cemetery area in the course of the settlement process at the beginning of the 1950s . In the course of the chapel building program of the Schleswig-Holstein regional church , financing was secured in 1961 and the church board chose a building design by the Hamburg architect Gert Johannsen. On March 30, 1962 , the foundation stone for the chapel building in Hohenfelde was laid and the chapel was inaugurated on the 3rd Sunday in Advent of the same year, December 16, 1962. In 1963 the first funeral service took place in the newly opened cemetery. In the following years, a used organ positive was first installed (1967), a second bell was purchased (1977) and new windows and heating were installed (1981), and the settlement street was named Kapellenstrasse . On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Luther, the chapel was given its current name "Martin Luther Chapel" on November 10, 1983 . A free-standing bell tower was also built that year , for which the foundation stone was only laid by the chapel architect Johannsen after completion. Gert Johannsen also tried to ensure that the chapel had a proper organ . This was created by the organ builder Rudolf Neuthor from Kiel and ceremoniously put into use on January 31, 1987 . In the same year, the 25th anniversary of the chapel was celebrated in a service on the third Advent.
