Location of the municipality of Rantzau in the district of Plön

Rantzau is a municipality in the Plön district in Schleswig-Holstein . Großkoppel, Papiermühle, Sasel and the Rantzau, Hohenhof and Hohensasel estates are located in the municipality.

Geography and traffic

Rantzau is located about 11 km northeast of Plön and 7 km southwest of Lütjenburg on the federal highway 430 . From 1910 to 1938 Rantzau was the station of the Kleinbahn Kirchbarkau – Preetz – Lütjenburg .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1226 as Ranzowen and comes from Slavonic . The family name of the von Rantzau family is also derived from him.

Good Rantzau

Although the manor house called Rantzau Castle looks relatively modest, as one of the parent houses of the Rantzau it is one of the historically important manors in the state of Schleswig-Holstein .

The original mansion was built in 1592 by the royal governor and bailiff of Segeberg Heinrich Rantzau . It consisted of two buildings built in the Renaissance style, standing parallel to each other, adorned with curved gables and only connected by a wall with a gate passage. A moat was drawn around the complex, behind the manor there was a small lake, which was created by the dammed Kossau , and in which - in the line of sight to the house - a circular island with a pleasure house was embedded.

In the 18th century, the Renaissance decorations were removed and the two individual houses were connected by means of a third wing, which is decorated with a baroque roof and lantern and still forms the symmetrical center today.

As on all Rantzaue goods, goods were produced for export as early as the 16th century, alongside agricultural products as well as industrial goods. The old paper mill that used to belong to the estate is still preserved in the municipality of Rantzau .
