Nettelsee (means something like: "lake surrounded by nettles") is a municipality in the Plön district in Schleswig-Holstein . The municipality is part of the Barkauer Land region in the south of the state capital Kiel, which was developed by the Preetz-Land administrative office as part of a rural structure and development analysis .

A lake of the same name is located about 1 kilometer south of the center of the village .

The municipality of Nettelsee extends northwest of the Nettelau River in the south of the Barkauer Land . The municipality is characterized by the lake of the same name and the neighboring Holzsee . The southern municipality border leads through the latter to the neighboring municipality of Stolpe.

The Nettelsee, which carries the municipality name, has an area of ​​about 2 hectares. It is traversed by the Nettelau, which flows into the Postsee near Preetz and thus drains as a tributary of the Alte Schwentine over the Schwentine into the Baltic Sea.

The Holzsee is located in the transition to the municipality of Stolpe. It has a water surface of about 19 hectares with a maximum depth of about 7 meters.

The cross represents the affiliation (since 1457) to the Preetz monastery . The blue background of the coat of arms represents the Nettelsee. The green nettle leaf indicates the place name, as it comes from the nettles in the region.

The municipality of Nettelsee is accessed by motorized individual traffic via the federal highway 404 . The municipality is located in the section between Kiel in the north and the transition to the federal motorway 21, which is currently a few kilometers south of the village . The further course in the direction of Kiel is currently being expanded to become a motorway (as of June 2020). The autobahn breakthrough in the village has already led to the relocation of the local junction of the subordinate state road 49 in the crossing east-west traffic section to the new route of a bypass running south of the village with a direct transition to state road 67 at the new autobahn junction Nettelsee (AS 6 ) led.

From 1911 to 1961 Nettelsee had a train station on the Kleinbahn Kiel – Segeberg . Their tracks were dismantled as early as 1962. The former route is now used for the cycle path that runs parallel to the B 404 to Kiel. The community is now connected to local public transport in the Schleswig-Holstein local transport network via bus route 410 from the Plön district transport company .
