Wittmoldt is a municipality in the Plön district in Schleswig-Holstein . The Wittmoldt and Güsdorf estates as well as the Eichhorst and Wittmoldt Siedlung districts belong to the municipality.

Geography, transport and economy

Wittmoldt is located on the Schwentine about 3 km west of Plön . Bundesstrasse 76 runs along the eastern edge of the municipality . In addition, the European long-distance hiking trails E1 and E6 lead through Wittmoldt.

The community is characterized by agriculture, 78% of the community area is agricultural area, another 17% is forest and water areas. The largest inland breeding area of the great cormorant in Schleswig-Holstein is in the Güsdorfer Teiche area (owned by the Marius Böger Foundation since 1993) with 392 breeding pairs (2012) .

In Wittmoldt there are several farms for dairy farming and arable farming, an agricultural machinery company and a training stud owned by the former world-class jumping rider Peter Luther .

history

Wittmoldt was first mentioned in 1281 as "Wotmolte". The name is of old Polish origin and refers to the "depth in the river".

Remnants of the earlier Wittmoldt forest glass production are now preserved in the North German glass collection in the Museum of the Plön district .

The Wittmoldt and Güsdorf manors in their current form date from around 1800. The former dairy on Gut Wittmoldt was built around 1780, the gatehouse in 1808 and the manor house in 1895, while the Güsdorf manor house was built in 1928. The former farm workers' settlement with brick half-timbered houses, which today makes up the center of Wittmoldt, was also built around 1800. Probably the most prominent guest at Gut Wittmoldt was the Marquis de La Fayette for a few days after his release from imprisonment in Olomouc . Later, the north German illustrator and children's book author Fanny von Bernstorff also stayed at Gut Wittmoldt.

The Wittmoldt estate was originally located on an island. A permanent connection to the shore was created around 1750, as the Duke of Plön claimed ownership of all the islands in the lakes. Wittmoldt has only been accessible on land since the road from Preetz to Plön was built : until 1863/64, the ferry from Gutsinsel to Dörnick was the only transport connection. Today's connecting road was paved in the mid-1960s.

In 1891 the Wittmold estate came into the possession of the von Bülow family , who built the manor house in the historicist style in 1895 . Nowadays the property is used for therapeutic riding and guest houses.

Wittmoldt had a village school until 1969, the structure and processes of which were documented by their last teacher as an example of a dwarf school .

Today's Wittmoldt community emerged from the estate district of the same name . There were 156 inhabitants recorded in the census in December 1910.
