Peter Luther (show jumper)

Peter Luther (born January 2, 1939 in Averfleth near Wilster ) is a former German show jumper .

Life

Luther, whose grandfather was a horse breeder, described himself as a “self-made rider” because he could do without a trainer until he was 20 years old. He worked on his parents' farm in Goltoft and devoted himself to riding in the evenings after work and on weekends. He was later trained at the regional riding school in Flensburg , which he then took over as director. In 1970 Luther became stable manager at Karl Hintz in Lückeberg. When training horses, he followed the motto “You have to have time for good horses”. In the mid-1970s, Luther moved to Wedel to work with entrepreneur Michael Herz's moor farm .

His greatest successes are winning the German Spring Derby in 1980 and winning the bronze medal with the team at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , each with the horse Livius. In 1982 in Dublin he won silver in the team competition of the world championship together with Paul Schockemöhle , Norbert Koof and Gerd Wiltfang . At European championships, Peter Luther won a total of three medals with the team: gold in 1981 in Munich , silver in 1979 in Rotterdam and bronze in 1985 in Dinard . Also important victories were: In 1978 Luther triumphed in the World Cup jumping in the West Berlin Germany Hall , in March 1981 he won the World Cup "Championships of Dortmund". In the meantime he has retired from active show jumping and works as a trainer for horses and riders on his farm in Wittmoldt , to which he moved in 1986. Luther is the recipient of the Fritz Thiedemann Medal and was awarded the Meteor Prize. His sons Thiess and Hauke and his grandchildren Jarka and Jesse became competition riders.
