The German show jumping and dressage derby (spelling: German show jumping and dressage derby ) is an international horse show with competitions in show jumping and dressage riding . The since 1920 in Hamburg-Klein Flottbek discharged German Jumping Derby is one of the oldest events of its kind. With its unique obstacles such as the Great Wall, Powder's grave or the Holstein-way jumps of since then unchanged course is one of the longest and most difficult in show jumping. The German Dressage Derby , which was held for the 58th time in 2016, can also look back on a long tradition .

The "presenting sponsor" of the German Show Jumping and Dressage Derby has been the traditional Hamburg company JJDarboven since 2014 . The Derby Park in Hamburg-Klein Flottbek has been part of the Global Champions League since 2016 .

General

According to the organizer, over 90,000 visitors attended the tournament in 2016. A record number of visitors was already set in 2015 with 86,000 spectators. The tournament is jointly organized by the North German and Flottbeker Reitverein (rights holder of the German Show Jumping and Dressage Derby) and EN GARDE Marketing GmbH, a cooperation agreement exists up to and including 2024.

The international dressage tests at Grand Prix level have been  advertised as CDI 4 * since 2011 . In addition, international dressage tests at intermediate level (as CDI 2 *) and national dressage tests are held.

The program of jumping competitions on the Derbyplatz has included, on the one hand, the tests of a CSI  5 * for top riders from home and abroad since 2008 . Starting with the entry test on Wednesday through the traditional championship in Hamburg on Thursday, the CSI 5 * will conclude with the Grand Prix as part of the Global Champions Tour on Saturday.

In addition, competitions for the Derby riders will also take place from Wednesday, the highlight of which is the German Jumping Derby on Sunday. These exams were advertised as CSI 3 * until 2016. Since 2017, the announcement has provided for a CSI 4 *, which includes a Derby Tour with the typical Derby competitions as well as a new Classic Tour with further jumping competitions. In addition, as CSIYH 1 * jumping competitions for young 7 and 8 year old show jumpers as well as an international show jumping amateur tour (CSIAm-A / CSIAm-B) are organized.

The total prize money in 2018 was around € 1,000,000. Of this, over € 600,000 went to the CSI 5 * tour with the Grand Prix with € 300,000 as the highlight. The German Jumping Derby was endowed with € 120,000. The most important dressage test, the German Dressage Derby , was endowed with € 30,000.

In addition to the two parallel derbies , the German driving derby was held in Klein Flottbek for a number of years from 1950 .

The tournament planned for May 20 to 24, 2020 had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The organizers are examining alternative dates for the anniversary event for the 100th birthday of the derby in July or August of that year.

German jumping derby

Andre Thieme with Nacorde am Wall

The German Jumping Derby , sometimes also called the Hamburg Derby, has been held in Hamburg-Klein Flottbek since 1920. It is considered to be one of the most important derbies in show jumping and is also referred to in specialist circles as the most difficult derby in the world. Traditionally, the German Jumping Derby is the audience highlight of the tournament.

The special thing about this derby is the 1230 m long course , which was designed by the passionate rider Eduard Pulvermann and which has not been changed in its lines or obstacles since 1920. Only the height of the jumps and, above all, the depth of the pole supports have been gradually adapted to the level of performance over the decades in order to maintain the degree of difficulty despite the improved soil.

Among the world-famous natural obstacles that are taken from the Holstein landscape, the most important or the most attractive obstacle is probably the Great Wall. Only one gallop behind the descent from the wall is the white plank on which the most jumping faults have occurred in the history of the derby. Another well-known obstacle is Pulvermann's grave . The length of the course is unusual for today's standards. In addition to a certain jumping ability, it demands courage, trust and stamina from horse and rider.

Since the second disobedience of the horse in international competitions led to exclusion, the number of exclusions has increased significantly despite top-class starting fields in the jumping derby.

From 2002 to 2010 the German Jumping Derby was the first stop on the Riders Tour . Since 2011 it has been the second stop in the tournament series. The spring derby took place for the ninetieth time in 2019.

Grand Prix

Kenneth Cheng with Can Do, Grand Prix of Hamburg 2010

While the German Jumping Derby is the highlight of the tournament for the spectators, this position has increasingly been taken on by the Grand Prix on Saturday for international show jumpers. In 2008, the organizer Volker Wulff signed a cooperation agreement with the initiator of the Global Champions Tour, Jan Tops . This made the Grand Prix stage of the Global Champions Tour. It is advertised for € 300,000 alone, making it the second highest endowed jumping competition in Germany.

The Grand Prix was an international jumping competition with jump-offs until 2007 and again since 2017 . In the years in between, the test was announced as an international jumping competition with two rounds and a jump- off. From 2008 to 2011 the Grand Prix was also named Global Champions Tour of Germany .

German dressage derby

Hubertus Schmidt, winner of the Blue Ribbon for winning the 54th German Dressage Derby (May 2012)
Most successful rider and best horse of the 54th German Dressage Derby: Hubertus Schmidt rides Premier , the horse of Aat van Essen

The three most successful riders of several qualification tests qualify for the German Dressage Derby . In the final, each of the three riders has to present both his horse and the horses of his competitors in an advanced level dressage test with piaffe and passage . The results of each rider are added up at the end to determine the winner.

The German Dressage Derby was held for the first time in 1955. In the first ten years the dressage derby was won six times by Willi Schultheis and four times by Reiner Klimke . At that time, this dressage test was called one of the most important dressage tests in international equestrianism. From 1965, the dressage derby was announced separately for women and men.

Over time, the German Dressage Derby lost its importance. In the 1990s, it was moved from the jumping derby site to Hemmingstedter Weg (about 1.5 kilometers from the rest of the tournament site). Here it took place almost in camera. During this time, changing horses was also abolished.

When Paul Schockemöhle became the sporting director of the German Show Jumping and Dressage Derby at the end of 1999, he decided to bring the dressage back and decide the final again by changing horses. The German Dressage Derby, like the German Jumping Derby, has to be something special. However, this met with resistance from the dressage riders, as three rounds in one morning would put too much strain on the dressage horses.

Thereupon Schockemöhles long-time friend and business partner Ullrich Kasselmann always registered three of his horses (he owns around 200 sport horses) to participate, with the aim of achieving the minimum number of points for a final participation. These horses are then offered to the riders qualified for the final for the final battle. Despite these efforts, the German Dressage Derby was canceled in 2001 and 2002. Also in 2003 it was initially said that the dressage derby could not be held due to a dispute between the organizers and the Hamburg-Altona district office . On June 1, 2003, the dressage derby was held in the Hamburg Derby Park.

In order to introduce the young generation of riders to the mode of changing horses, two new series of tests were created as part of the German Dressage Derby: since 2009, the pony riders in Hamburg have been riding the German Pony Dressage Derby; Since 2010, there have been two dressage tests for riders in the U25 age group, the second of which involves changing horses.

In 2009 the fiftieth German dressage derby was held in Hamburg-Klein Flottbek, due to a counting error, the anniversary was followed up in 2010 and the count was corrected from 2011. In 2010 the Grand Prix (qualification for the German Dressage Derby), the Grand Prix Spécial and the Grand Prix Freestyle will be held for the first time as an international dressage tournament ( CDI 3 *). The dressage derby itself, however, continued to be announced nationally.

Due to a special permit from the FEI , the dressage derby itself will also be announced internationally as a shortened Grand Prix with horse change from 2011 onwards. Up until now, the FEI regulations did not provide for a separate dressage test for this.

With the international invitation to tender, however, the possibility of using rental horses also changed; these must now have competed in the qualification test (the Grand Prix), but the start may have been made with a different rider. In the first few years of this new regulation, this led to uncertainty among several participants and to the withdrawal of willingness to start the final test. Here, however, a special derby regulation came into effect: if the qualified participants did not start, they were retroactively disqualified in the Grand Prix de Dressage (the qualification test). The next best participants of the Qualifying Grand Prix move up into the final.

Due to this regulation, a special feature arose in 2011: Kathleen Keller, daughter of the 2003 dressage derby winner (Dolf-Dietram Keller), qualified for both the horse change in the U25 tour and the German dressage derby and won both exams too. In 2014 the test with horse change took place for the first time without German participation. In 2019, Frederic Wandres won the two major competitions with horse changing in Germany within four weeks with the professional equestrian championship dressage and the German dressage derby.
