Global Champions Tour 2011
The Global Champions Tour 2011 was the sixth season of the Global Champions Tour , an international show jumping tournament . Alongside the FEI Nations Cup, it is considered to be the most important tournament series in the “green season”.
The 2011 season was the fourth season as an officially recognized tournament series by the FEI . The series is organized by Jan Tops , the patroness initially being Athina Onassis de Miranda .
Course of the tournament series
The series stretched from March 17th to November 12th in 2011, making it the longest Global Champions Tour season to date.
Most of the tournaments in which the Global Champions Tour 2011 takes place were in Europe (seven stations). The beginning and end of the season were stages on the Arabian Peninsula, the penultimate tournament took place in South America. All of these tournaments were advertised as CSI 5 *, the highest category in show jumping.
The special stages took place on Saturday afternoons or evenings. They were advertised as a jumping competition with two different rounds and jump-offs , the height of the obstacles was up to 1.60 meters. These exams were each endowed with at least € 285,000 .
The second round reached the best 18 riders of the first round or all riders with faultless rides, if there are more than 18. The jump-off was achieved by the participants who were tied for first place after the two rounds (usually with no mistakes in both rounds).
media
Eurosport was once again the media partner of the Global Champions Tour in the 2011 season and broadcasts the second round as well as the jump-off of the special stages live or with a delay.
Outside of the TV broadcasts, the Global Champions Tour tournaments were broadcast live on the Global Champions Tour website. The English-speaking commentator on the Internet broadcasts is the Belgian Frederik de Backer.
The exams
1st test: Qatar
The Qatar Global Champions Tour took place from March 17 to March 19, 2011 at the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club in Doha .
The special stage took place on March 19, 2011 from 6.45 p.m. local time and was endowed with € 475,000. The course designer was the German Frank Rothenberger.
The second round reached 17 faultless riders and one rider who got a time penalty in the first round. The second round was significantly more difficult and, according to the course designer, was almost Olympic level. In this round four riders remained clear, of which Denis Lynch did not make it into the jump-off due to the time error from the first round.

3rd exam: Germany
Germany's Global Champions Tour tournament, the German Jumping and Dressage Derby , took place from June 2nd to June 5th, 2011 in Hamburg - Klein Flottbek .
The special stage was held on June 4, 2011 from 1.40 p.m. local time and was endowed with € 285,000. Frank Rothenberger was again commissioned to build the course.
The first round of the test was very demanding, also due to the tight time allowed. Four riders with their horses remained without faults, four more pairs completed the first round with a time penalty. In the second lap, more than half of the eighteen riders who were still eligible to compete were faultless, three riders managed a fault-free ride in both laps and made it into the jump-off. Here the first two riders made no mistakes. Janne Friederike Meyer, who was the last participant in the jump-off, gave up after two obstacle drops to protect the horse.

5th test: Monaco
The Monaco Global Champions Tour took place from June 23 to June 25, 2011 on the banks of Boulevard Albert 1er at Port Hercule.
The special stage took place on June 25, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. local time and was endowed with € 285,000. The course designer was Frank Rothenberger for the fourth time this season.
The tournament in Monaco took place on a provisionally raised clay court for the event. Due to the cramped space conditions in Monaco, this is quite small compared to the often very large spaces in the green season. This results in a particular difficulty for the rider, the distances and gallop stretches are correspondingly short here.
The first round was completed by 12 riders without mistakes in the allowed time. The second round of the test turned out to be much more difficult, only three riders with their horses without jumping and timing errors. Before that, however, only Rolf-Göran Bengtsson was fault-free on the first lap, so that the victory went to him without a jump-off. Christian Ahlmann barely missed the double zero lap, he was 95 hundredths of a second above the allowed time of 60 seconds on the second lap and received a time penalty for this.
Honorary president of the tournament was Charlotte Casiraghi, daughter of Caroline von Hannover and herself an amateur show jumper. The congratulations at the award ceremony for the Global Champions Tour ranking were brought by Prince Albert II .

6th test: Portugal
The Global Champions Tour of Portugal took place from June 30th to July 2nd 2011 at the Hipódromo Manuel Possolo in Cascais . Since the neighboring Estoril is advertised as a sports tourism region with a large advertising campaign, Estoril is usually named as the venue.
The special stage of the Global Champions Tour took place on July 2, 2011 from 7:00 p.m. local time, the endowment was € 285,000. Frank Rothenberger was again a course designer.
In the first lap, nine riders remained clear, two participants had only one time penalty. For most of the riders with their horses, the second round was less problematic than the first round, more than half of the now 18 riders remained error-free. A total of six riders completed both rounds without any mistakes and made it into the jump-off. Like the second round, this took place under floodlights. In the jump-off there were three riders with no mistakes.

7. Exam: France II
So far, France is the only country in the history of the Global Champions Tour to host two tournaments in one season. The second Global Champions Tour tournament in France will take place from July 22nd to July 24th 2011 on the grounds of the racecourse on the edge of the castle of Chantilly . The stadium is named after Édouard de Rothschild , who financially supported the construction of the field.
The special stage was held on July 23, 2011 from 3:30 p.m. local time. It was endowed with € 285,000. The course designer was the Italian Uliano Vezzani.
The test was characterized by rainy weather, which led to sometimes slippery conditions on the grass floor of the riding arena. Six riders and their horses completed the first round without any mistakes, and four riders only had time penalties. In the second lap nine riders could stay clear. In both rounds, three riders remained clear and thus entered the final jump-off. Here triumphed Edwina Alexander with a guide only three hundredths of a second.

The special stage took place on August 13, 2011 from 2.15 p.m. local time and was endowed with € 285,000. As in Chantilly, the jumping course for this competition was created by Uliano Vezzani.
Twelve riders were able to finish the first round without errors, three more only had time penalties. Six horse-rider pairs remained without obstacle errors in the second round, two times only time errors were noted. Four riders and their horses remained faultless in both rounds and thus took part in the jump-off.
The win in the jump-off went to the American Beezie Madden . The second big winner of the day was Athina Onassis de Miranda , who for the first time in her career had no drops in both rounds of a CSI 5 * Grand Prix and ended up sixth with three time penalties.

The tournament organizer is Álvaro Affonso de Miranda Neto , who named the tournament "Athina Onassis International Horse Show" after his wife.
The special stage was held on September 4, 2011 from 4 p.m. local time. With prize money of € 1,000,000, the Rio de Janeiro Grand Prix is the most highly endowed jumping competition in the world in 2011 - ahead of the Calgary Grand Prix (with C $ 1,000,000 prize money) and Saugerties (1,000,000. US $ 000 in prize money).
The course builder for this test was the Belgian Luc Musette. In accordance with the prize money, the course was very demanding, in the first round there were only two faultless rounds, five riders gave up on the course. In the second round 18 riders entered, six of them with eight penalty points. The second round was more manageable for most of the riders with their horses, ten riders made no mistakes. The only double clear in the test was shown by the Dutchman Gerco Schröder with the Belgian stallion London , a jump-off was therefore not necessary.

The second round turned out to be less difficult for the participants, eleven out of 18 riders with their horses remained faultless. A total of eight riders, who remained clear in both laps, entered the jump-off. The victory went to the Frenchman Roger-Yves Bost, who was the only rider to use a shortcut shortly before the finish and thus achieved the fastest time of the jump-off without mistakes.
