The Global Champions Tour 2015 was the tenth season of the Global Champions Tour , an international tournament series. It is considered one of the most important series in show jumping .

Longines was again the name sponsor and timepiece of the series, which is why it was named Longines Global Champions Tour 2015 . The Global Champions Tour (GCT) is an FEI recognized tournament series. The organizer is Jan Tops , and McCourt Sports Limited, a subsidiary of the US financial company McCourt Global, has held half of the shares in the series since summer 2014.

Course of the tournament series

With the change in ownership of the Global Champions Tour, the tournament series got a stage in the United States for the first time since 2007, which marked the start of the season. Most of the tournaments in which the Global Champions Tour 2015 took place are held in Europe (12 stations). The event ended with a stage on the Arabian Peninsula, and for the second time a Global Champions Tour tournament was held in China.

The special stages of the 2015 season took place between April 4 and November 15, 2015. The number of stages had increased to 15 by one station compared to the previous season. Two new GCT tournaments in Miami Beach and Rome prevented the stage in Lausanne from being canceled. All tournaments were  advertised as CSI 5 *, the highest category in show jumping.

The special stages took place on Saturday afternoons or evenings. They were advertised as a jumping competition with two different rounds and jump-offs , the height of the obstacles was up to 1.60 meters. These exams are endowed with at least 285,000 each .

The second round of the tests is achieved by the best 18 riders of the first round or all riders with faultless rides, provided that there are more than 18. The jump-off is reached by the participants who were ranked first after the two rounds (usually with no mistakes in both rounds).

media

Eurosport remained the media partner of the Global Champions Tour. It broadcast the second round and the jump-off of the special stages live or with a delay. The special stages and many other tests of GCT tournaments were on the website of the Global Champions Tour via live stream transmitted.

The exams

1st exam: Miami Beach

The 2015 season started with a GCT leg in North America. After a test of the Winter Equestrian Festival was last special test of the Global Champions Tour in 2007 , Miami Beach was chosen as the venue. For the GCT tournament, a provisional riding stadium was built on the beach in Miami Beach at the level of the Setai Hotel. The side of the riding stadium facing the ocean was left open so that beach visitors could also watch the riding competitions.

The traditional “American Invitational” jumping competition, which was held for the 43rd time, was integrated into the tournament. In the previous year this had been carried out at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, in previous years it had taken place in Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. In 2015, Scott Brash won the American Invitational on Friday night with Hello Forever.

One day later, on Saturday afternoon (April 4th), the GCT special test was held. The allowed time played no role for the riders in the first round of the test, only one starter pair received a time penalty point in addition to their result. In this round twelve horse-rider pairs remained without faults. Six riders with four penalty points also made it into the second round. In the second lap, four starter pairs again remained clear and made it into the jump-off.

Bassem Hassan Mohammed was the first to start the jump-off. He competed here with Palloubet d'Halong , which he had taken over from his compatriot Ali Al Rumaihi the previous year . With a fast time of 39.74 seconds, he initially took the lead. Roger Yves Bost had little luck, who, as the second starter Nippon d'Elle, rode a turn too improperly and had to jump again, which earned him four penalty points for a refusal and a time penalty. The victory went to the penultimate jump-off participant, Scott Brash won this test with his successful horse Sanctos .

2nd test: Antwerp

For the second time, a Global Champions Tour stage was held in the port of Antwerp. This second station of the tournament series was held from April 22nd to 25th, 2015, the special test took place on Saturday evening (April 25th).

As in Miami, there were only a few time penalties in the first round of the Antwerp GCT special stage. 14 pairs of starters remained fault-free, four horse-rider pairs with four points and a time of 69 seconds also made it into the second round.

In the second lap, six participants managed another flawless lap. In the jump-off of these six riders there were three clear rides, the victory went to Simon Delestre and ten year old Ryan des Hayettes .

3rd test: Madrid

From May 1st to 3rd, 2015 the Spanish station of the Global Champions Tour took place in the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid in Madrid. The Global Champions Tour special stage was held on Saturday from 5:00 p.m.

In the first round of this test, only six riders with their horses got no obstacle errors, two of them (like more than ten other riders) had time penalties. Due to the high number of throws, almost all riders got four penalty points in the second round of the best 18 participants.

There were also a number of errors in the second round. With a result of less than four penalty points, only three participants came, only Luciana Diniz and her gray horse Winningmood managed a second faultless ride, so that she was the winner of the test without the need to jump-off.

4th test: Shanghai

For the second time, a Global Champions Tour stage took place in Shanghai from May 8-10, 2015 . As in the previous year, the tournament is the only show jumping tournament in mainland China where internationally successful show jumpers compete with their Grand Prix horses. In return, in order to ensure the quarantine conditions for the horses, no Chinese participants were at the start with their horses.

The special stage of the Global Champions Tour took place on May 9th from 2:15 pm local time. Thirteen pairs of starters made no mistakes in the first round, other riders with one and four penalty points also made it into the second round of the best 18 participants. In the second lap, eight horse-rider pairs failed again. Also for the second time without a jumping fault, but with a time penalty on the first round, Luca Maria Moneta and Connery just missed the jump-off. In the jump-off there was only one obstacle error, seven riders remained without errors. Harrie Smolders and his 15-year-old mare Regina Z won with a clear lead .

The Grand Prix of Hamburg, the GCT evaluation test of this tournament, was held on the afternoon of May 16, 2015. In the first round of the test, eight starter pairs managed a faultless lap; two more crossed the finish line without any obstacle errors, but with a time penalty. For the second round of the best 18 riders also qualified with a result of four penalty points and a time of less than 81 seconds.

In the second lap without a mistake, but with a time penalty from the first lap, Luciana Diniz with Winningmood just missed the jump-off (seventh place). In the jump-off of the six horse-rider pairs, who remained without mistakes in both laps, Nicola Philippaerts and Darco son Forever d'Arco ter Linden were the first to start. Philippaerts did not make any mistakes, but he had to give up his lead to the second run-off participant. Philipp Weishaupt and Chico made no mistakes in under 50 seconds. Hans-Dieter Dreher came with Embassy II almost came close to Weishaupts, but four penalty points in the jump-off threw him back (sixth place). Things went better for Kent Farrington, who needed less than 49 seconds for his flawless ride with Voyeur and took the lead. From there, Janne Friederike Meyer did not displace him , who came fifth with Goja without making any mistakes.

7. Exam: Monaco

The Monaco Global Champions Tour took place from June 25th to June 27th, 2015 on the banks of the Boulevard Albert 1er at Port Hercule. The tournament, which was the tenth stage of the Global Champions Tour, was played on a temporary clay court for the event.

In order to reach the second round of the test, a fault-free lap was almost imperative in Monaco, as 15 starter pairs did not make any mistakes. Only the three fastest riders with four penalty points also made it into the second round. Nine of the 15 faultless participants in the first round also managed a ride without penalty points in the second round, which brought them the jump-off. The jump-off course, which is quite short due to the small riding arena, was completed by six riders without any mistakes, Scott Brash succeeded best. With the nine-year-old mare M'Lady he won in a time of 28.45 seconds.

The Portuguese stage of the Global Champions Tour was held from July 9th to 11th, 2015 in the Hipódromo Manuel Possolo in Cascais . Since the neighboring Estoril is advertised as a sports tourism region with an advertising campaign, Estoril is usually named as the venue.

The GCT evaluation test concluded the tournament program, which was very clearly laid out with four tests spread over two days of competition. In the second round of the test, 15 participants without errors from the first round and the three fastest four-error riders entered. Four riders from this starting field succeeded in another faultless ride with their horses in the second round. Ludger Beerbaum just missed the jump-off , who received a time penalty with Chaman . Scott Brash emerged as the winner of the jump-off, defending his victory from last year. In addition, this first place was already the third win of a Global Champions Tour stage for Brash in 2015.

The third French stage of the Global Champions Tour season took place from July 17th to 19th, 2015 on the grounds of the racecourse on the edge of the Castle of Chantilly . Due to the CSIO Mannheim taking place at the same time, there were no participants riding for Germany in Chantilly.

Scoring points for the Global Champions Tour could be earned on Saturday afternoon (July 18) at the Longines GCT Grand Prix of Chantilly. In the first lap, unusually few starter pairs remained without errors, there were only nine zero-error rides. The Colombian Carlos Lopez, among others, benefited from this starting position, finishing fourth with a time penalty (which he got in the first round). René Tebbel was less lucky , who received eight penalty points in the second lap after a faultless ride with Forlap and fell back to 17th place. Three riders and their horses entered the jump-off, with Gregory Wathelet and the 10-year-old stallion Conrad winning the only faultless ride in the jump-off .

In the first round of the test there were 18 faultless rides, which qualified for the second round. 12 starter pairs managed a fault-free lap in the second lap, so that 12 riders started in the jump-off. In the jump-off, the decision was tight, John Whitaker and Argento were only eight hundredths of a second slower than Rolf-Göran Bengtsson, who won the test with Casall .

This new tournament was held from September 11th to 13th, 2015 in the Stadio dei Marmi .

In the first round of the GCT test in Rome, 20 riders managed to get to the finish line without penalty points and thus make it into the second round. 14th exam: Vienna

After a one-year break, the Austrian GCT tournament took place again on Vienna's Rathausplatz . The Vienna Masters tournament was held from September 17th to September 20th, 2015.

Only six horse-rider pairs managed to get no mistakes in the first round of the Vienna GCT test. As a result, in addition to three riders with one time penalty each, almost all participants entered the second round with four penalty points. Due to this initial situation, the starting field for the jump-off remained small, only three starters managed to make the jump-off with another fault-free lap. René Tebbel , who with Forlap was still in the lead after the first lap, received four penalty points in the second lap and slipped to fourteenth place.

In the jump-off, Luciana Diniz was the last rider to enter the course. After Harrie Smolders had no penalty point in 43.19 seconds and Kevin Staut had collected eight penalty points in the jump-off, she had the chance to win. With Winningmood she stayed clear in 42.81 seconds and won the test.

Once again, Doha , the capital of Qatar, hosted the final stage of the Global Champions Tour. The tournament was held from November 12th to 14th, 2015 in the Al Shaqab riding facility built in 2013 . Before the special stage in Doha, the race for overall victory in the 2015 season was still completely open: Scott Brash, Luciana Diniz and Rolf-Göran Bengtsson were only a few points apart in the overall standings.

In the first round of the test, five starter pairs had failed to make mistakes. The second round reduced the group of error-free participants to four, who made it into the jump-off. While Scott Brash had only just reached the second round with Sanctos , Diniz and Bengtsson both qualified for the jump-off.

Ali bin Chalid Al Thani got eight penalty points in front of his home crowd in the jump-off . Rolf-Göran Bengtsson and his stallion Casall achieved the slowest clear round of the jump-off. Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum was faster, but victory went to Luciana Diniz with Fit For Fun , who also clearly won the overall ranking.
