The Global Champions Tour 2013 was the eighth season of the Global Champions Tour , an international tournament series. It is considered one of the most important series in show jumping .

With the 2013 season, Longines was presented as the new name sponsor and timepiece of the series, which is why it is now called the Longines Global Champions Tour 2013 . The Global Champions Tour (GCT) is a tournament series recognized by the FEI and organized by Jan Tops .

Course of the tournament series

Most of the tournaments in which the Global Champions Tour 2013 took place are held in Europe (eleven stations). The tour ended with a stage on the Arabian Peninsula.

All tournaments were advertised as CSI 5 *, the highest category in show jumping.

The special stages took place on Saturday afternoons or evenings. They were advertised as a jumping competition with two different rounds and jump-offs , the height of the obstacles was up to 1.60 meters. These exams were each endowed with at least 285,000 .

The second round of the tests was achieved by the best 18 riders of the first round or all riders with faultless rides, if there are more than 18. The jump-off was achieved by the participants who were tied for first place after the two rounds (usually with no mistakes in both rounds).

The 2013 season was shorter than that of the previous year, it lasted from May 3 to November 23, 2013.

media

As in previous years, Eurosport was the media partner of the Global Champions Tour and broadcast the second round and the jump-off of the special stages live or with a delay. Outside the TV broadcasts many trials were the Global Champions Tour tournaments on the website of the Global Champions Tour via live stream transmitted.

The exams

1st test: Madrid

The venue of the Spanish Global Champions Tour stage changed again compared to previous years: In 2013 it will take place in the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid in Madrid. CSI 5 * tournaments and Nations Cup tournaments have already been held here in previous years. The tournament will take place from May 3rd to May 5th, 2013. In addition to the Global Champions Tour special stage, which took place on Saturday from 5:00 p.m., the traditional King's Cup (Copa del Rey) will take place on Sunday.

In the first round of the GCT test, 13 riders with their horses got no jumping faults, but two of them had to accept time penalties. Five other riders with four penalty points qualified for the second round due to their fast time. Of the riders with four penalty points, only Marcus Ehning with Nolte's kitchen girl managed a faultless round, which enabled them to work their way up to ninth place in the final ranking. Eight starter pairs managed a second fault-free lap in the second lap, which meant they made it into the jump-off. Seven riders suffered penalty points in the jump-off, only Michael Whitaker managed a third fault-free ride with his gelding Viking , which brought him the victory.

2nd exam: Hamburg

The first stage of the Global Champions Tour 2013 in Germany, the German Show Jumping and Dressage Derby , took place from May 9th to May 12th 2013 in Hamburg - Klein Flottbek . The Grand Prix of Hamburg, the GCT evaluation test of this tournament, took place from 1:25 p.m. local time.

In the first lap, only eight riders managed a faultless ride, so that ten riders qualified for the second lap with a result of four penalty points. In the second lap, ten starters managed a flawless lap, five of them were flawless for the second time. These five participants moved into the jump-off, which was dominated by the German riders: in addition to three German starters, the native German Katharina Offel also qualified . The offel riding for Ukraine was the only one to accept drops in the jump-off and came in fifth with eight penalty points. Christian Ahlmann won the test with Codex One, almost a second ahead of the runner-up .

3rd exam: Wiesbaden

Award ceremony of the GCT evaluation test in Wiesbaden

For the second time part of the Global Champions Tour is the International Whitsun Tournament in Wiesbaden . This tournament, which will be held for the 77th time, will be held in Biebrich Castle Park from May 17th to May 20th, 2013. The GCT Grand Prix was held on May 18, 2013 from around 4:30 p.m.

The first round of the test was an easy-to-solve task for the riders, 20 participants finished the course with less than four penalty points. However, since only 18 starters qualify for the second round, two riders missed participation with a time penalty. The second lap was noticeably more difficult, especially the final line with a double combination and a steep jump led to some mistakes. Six horse-rider pairs managed a faultless lap in the second lap, which qualified them for the jump-off.

After Ludger Beerbaum and Chiara were the first to show a fault-free ride in the jump-off at a somewhat moderate pace (which brought fourth place in the end), all subsequent riders tried to secure victory through fast rides. After Edwina Tops-Alexander took the lead, Laura Kraut was in the lead in the end, with Cedric she was another 23 hundredths of a second faster than Tops-Alexander.

The special stage of the GCT took place on June 8, 2013 from 3:45 p.m. local time. This test, which was held here for the first time, was endowed with € 450,000. In the first round of the test, 18 starter pairs managed to remain without penalty points, they qualified for the second round. The second round was a manageable task for the rider: no starter had to accept more than eight penalty points, ten riders qualified for the jump-off with another zero-error ride.

Christian Ahlmann took the lead early in the jump-off with Taloubet Z , which he kept until shortly before the end of the jump-off. Nick Skelton started as the penultimate starter, who was one hundredth of a second faster than Ahlmann with Big Star . Last in the jump-off was Ben Maher, who with Cella had already achieved the fastest clear lap on the first lap. He was also quick and error-free in the jump-off and secured victory in the British GCT stage with a time of 30.58 seconds.

The Grand Prix, the special stage of the GCT, took place on June 15 from 8:00 p.m. In the first lap, eight riders remained without mistakes, three only had to accept a time penalty. 6th test: Monaco

The Monaco Global Champions Tour took place from June 27 to June 29, 2013 on the banks of Boulevard Albert 1er at Port Hercule. The tournament will be played on a provisional clay court for the event. The starting field for 2013 was less populated than in the previous year, as the traditional and more highly endowed CHIO Aachen took place at the same time .

In the Grand Prix of the Prince of Monaco 49 riders started with their horses, seven of them remained without errors in the first round. Three riders with one time penalty and eight starters with four penalty points also qualified for the second round. In this five participants remained without errors, three of them had already been without errors in the first round and thus formed the field of participants in the jump-off.

Edwina Tops-Alexander was the first to go into the jump-off, but risked too much in one turn and had to accept a refusal and time penalties. After her, William Funnell started, who suffered a drop and in the end, like in Cannes, came in second. The victory went to the last starter pair in the jump-off, Richard Spooner and his 15-year-old gelding Cristallo . Both had already won this exam in 2008 and 2009.

7. Exam: Estoril

The Portuguese stage of the Global Champions Tour was held in the Hipódromo Manuel Possolo in Cascais . Since the neighboring Estoril is advertised as a sports tourism region with a large advertising campaign, Estoril is usually named as the venue. The tournament was held from July 4th to 6th, 2013, the special stage took place on the final day from 7:00 p.m. local time.

In the first round of the GCT jumping ten horse-rider pairs remained without mistakes, eight further starter pairs with four penalty points also qualified for the second round. In the second round, which, like the jump-off, took place under floodlights, the time allowed was chosen to be tight. Therefore, three riders had to accept time penalties. Nine starters made no mistakes in the second lap, five of them had already succeeded in the first lap, they made it into the jump-off. In the jump-off two starters had another clear round, victory went to the last starter, Henrik von Eckermann with Gotha FRH .

8th exam: Chantilly

The second French stage of the Global Champions Tour took place from July 19 to July 21, 2013 on the grounds of the racecourse on the edge of the Castle of Chantilly . Scoring points for the Global Champions Tour could be obtained on Saturday afternoon at the Longines GCT Grand Prix of Chantilly.

In the first round of this test, 28 starter pairs had a result of four or less penalty points, the 18 best of these qualified for the second round. Eleven riders managed a clear round in the first round, nine of them succeeded again in the second round and thus qualified for the jump-off. In this early Christian Ahlmann took the lead with the stallion Codex One , his result remained unmatched until shortly before the end of the jump-off. Beezie Madden started as the penultimate starter with Cortes 'C' and was one and a half seconds faster than Ahlmann on a faultless lap. Álvaro de Miranda Neto was the last starter in the jump-off, with Bogeno he was almost two seconds faster than Madden, but he had an obstacle release and was only sixth. There was a moment of shock in the jump-off when Jérome Hurel and Ohm de Ponthual chose the wrong jump point at an obstacle and both of them fell on this obstacle.

9. Examination: Valkenswaard

The Netherlands hosted the Global Champions Tour from August 16 to August 18, 2013: The tournament took place at the hometown of series founder Jan Tops in Valkenswaard . The special stage of the GCT took place on Saturday (August 17th) at 2:15 p.m.

In the first round of the test, 18 pairs of starters got no mistakes. This corresponded exactly to the number of participants planned for the second round. The Qatari rider Bassem Hassan Mohammed just missed the second lap , who with Rosalia was 28 hundredths of a second behind the allowed time. In the second lap, significantly fewer horse-rider pairs remained faultless, with only five qualifying for the jump-off.

In the jump-off, three out of five riders came from the Netherlands, but the Netherlands could not intervene in the decision about the victory. Simon Delestre was the first to start with Qlassic Bois Margot , with no mistakes and a moderate time. The three following Dutch starters each had to accept one or two obstacle drops. Álvaro Affonso de Miranda Neto went into the jump-off as the last starter, with Bogeno he was clear and four seconds faster than Delestre.

10th exam: Lausanne

Winner in the pouring rain: Lucy Davis won the special test in Lausanne with Barron

For the second time, the Global Champions Tour made a stop in Switzerland. The venue for the GCT tournament was Lausanne , the seat of many sports associations and organizations. The Lausanne International Horse Show was held from September 12th to September 14th 2013 on the Place de Bellerive on Lake Geneva .

The GCT Grand Prix de la Ville de Lausanne took place on September 14th from 6 p.m. In the first round of the test, 17 horse-rider pairs remained faultless, so that only one other pair qualified for the second round. Nine starters qualified for the jump-off in the second lap, and they again made no mistakes. The moment of shock in the second lap was Laura Kraut's fall, but it went off lightly.

In the jump-off, Patrice Delaveau and his stallion Carinjo HDC took the lead and could not be ousted for a long time. His compatriot Kevin Staut, who is also sponsored by the Haras des Coudrettes stable, missed Delaveau's time by seven hundredths of a second with Silvana HDC . The last starter was the 21-year-old American Lucy Davis with Barron . The rider, trained by Markus Beerbaum , remained flawless and was also faster than Patrice Delaveau and thus secured her first victory in a Global Champions Tour stage.

11. Examination: Vienna

Victorious in Vienna: Gerco Schröder and London

Also for the second time, a week after Lausanne, a Global Champions Tour test took place in Austria. Here was the motto horse is city on the Vienna Town Hall Square , the tournament Vienna Masters performed. The tournament, organized by an organizing committee headed by show jumper Thomas Frühmann , was held from September 19 to September 22, 2013.

The tournament and the GCT special stage on Saturday evening were characterized by rainy weather. In the first lap, 11 starters got no mistakes, 13 of 47 riders had to accept time penalties. In the second lap, the time allowed was also a major challenge for the participants, seven out of 18 riders got time penalties. Until shortly before the end of the second lap, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson and Casall were alone in the lead. However, the last three starters in circulation also managed fault-free laps and thus secured the jump-off.

In the jump-off, Gerco Schröder succeeded as the second starter on the first faultless ride. Harrie Smolders showed a slower clear lap with his 9 year old gelding Jackson Hole . Luciana Diniz was the last rider in the jump-off with Winningmood , but had to accept two obstacle drops and was thus in fourth place in the end.

Shanghai

The penultimate stop on the Global Champions Tour was a stage in the Chinese special economic zone Shanghai . As in the previous year, however, this was canceled. The problems resulting from the quarantine conditions (export of horses from China to Europe not permitted) have still not been resolved.

12th test: Doha

After Abu Dhabi was the venue for the final stage of the GCT last year , it will be held in Doha in 2013 . The venue for the tournament, which will take place from November 21 to November 23, 2013, is the newly built Al Shaqab riding facility . This was opened in March 2013 with a major tournament. The GCT final tournament attracted attention because it was the first major sporting event in Qatar after Amnesty International criticized the working and living conditions of migrant workers in the emirate .

The last GCT special stage of the season started on November 23rd at 5:15 p.m. local time, the second round started around 8 p.m. In the first round of the test, 11 participants managed a fault-free ride, another seven riders with four penalty points qualified for the second round. The second lap was very demanding, none of the riders with four penalty points managed a faultless lap. The riders who had not been punished so far also had a hard time: only three of them again made no mistakes and thus made it into the jump-off. Christian Ahlmann and the Belgian Constant van Paesschen were too slow on the second lap and ended the test with a time penalty.

Ludger Beerbaum was the first participant in the jump-off. With Chiara he showed a fast, faultless lap. Marcus Ehning and his stallion Plot Blue had little luck in the jump-off: Right at the beginning a pole fell, so he finished the test in third place. Scott Brash was the last starter to go into the jump-off: After he had already secured the overall victory in the Global Champions Tour overall standings in 2013, he was able to take full risk here. With Sanctos he was again clear and was 66 hundredths of a second faster than Beerbaum in the end. Brash thus also won the special test in Doha on his 28th birthday.
