Denis Lynch (born May 3, 1976 in County Tipperary ) is an Irish show jumper .

Career

Lynch was taught to ride at the age of 12 from his grandfather, a trainer of thoroughbred horses. For this he rode obstacle races until he was too big for it at the age of 18.

At first he worked as a groom near London. Here he was discovered by Peter Weinberg , and he moved to his stable in 1994. Here, in Germany, he rode jumping competitions for the first time. He achieved his first international victory in 2000 when he won the Grand Prix at the CSI in Mauren (Liechtenstein) . From 2002 to 2004 Lynch rode the horses of the Straumann family from Switzerland , from which he continues to get horses. He also trains Flaminia Straumann , who was born in 1992 and who is now also taking part in international jumping competitions.

He has been self-employed since 2004 and ran his own training and tournament stable on the Kemper family's facility in Münster until 2013 . After separating from his wife, he left the facility and is now based in Eschweiler, where he has his horses on Helena Stormanns' facility .

After a disagreement between Lynch and the Irish Equestrian Federation (Horse Sport Ireland) Lynch announced that it would not start for the Irish team in 2011. These inconsistencies were resolved after talks in February / March 2011.

In the following years, Lynch was one of the most successful Irish show jumpers and was part of the Irish Nations Cup and Championship teams several times. At the European Championships 2017 he was part of the victorious Irish team, in the individual he came in tenth with All Star .

Lynch was married and has one daughter. He remarried in November 2016, his current wife is the Australian show jumper Julia Hargreaves .

Unauthorized medication

In 2008 he took part with Lantinus for Ireland in the equestrian competitions as part of the Summer Olympics in Hong Kong . However, Lynch's horse Lantinus tested positive for capsaicin . Since capsaicin was classified as an unauthorized medication or doping at the time of the 2008 Olympic Equestrian Games, depending on the area of ​​application, it had to be clarified what the Lynch case was. The FEI Tribunal could not prove a doping offense and sentenced Lynch to a three-month ban due to illicit medication. The judgment, which was milder than that of the Ahlmann , Alves , Hansen and Pessoa cases , was justified by the fact that Lynch had already presented the Equi-Block ointment, the use of which caused the positive sample, at a press conference in Hong Kong and its use - on horseback, and not on the legs for hypersensitization - explained. He also stated there that he had been using the remedy for years.

Thermographic examinations

Lynch's horse Lord Luis was disqualified from the competition at the CHIO Aachen 2011 because of an oversensitivity on the horse's leg as not fit to compete , a few months later at the Global Champions Tour tournament in Rio de Janeiro his horse All Inclusive NRW was excluded from the competition. At the CHIO Aachen (2012), Lynch ran into problems again: A thermographic examination of the legs of his horse Lantinus revealed that the brightly lit sensitive areas on the left foreleg and hind legs had enlarged in comparison to a previous examination after Lantinus had been ridden. Lantinus was therefore considered to be hypersensitive and then disqualified by the FEI veterinarians.

Lynch stressed in a press release that at no point was it concluded that the hypersensitivity was anything other than a natural occurrence. Nevertheless, after the CHIO, the Irish Equestrian Federation announced that it would withdraw Lynch's nomination as individual starter with Lantinus at the 2012 Olympic Games. The Irish national trainer show jumping should name another horse-rider pair as a starter.
