FEI Nations Cup 2017 (show jumping)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The FEI Nations Cup 2017 for show jumpers was a season of the FEI Nations Cup . He was thus in a tradition of more than a hundred years of Nations Cup competitions in show jumping.

Course of the tournament series

After five years, the sponsorship of the Saudi Equestrian Fund ended with the 2016 season, the Nations Cup series was thus without a main or name sponsor. Longines continued to sponsor the series as the “official timekeeper” .

There were significant changes to the regulations in comparison to the previous year in Europa League 1, on the one hand the number of teams (now eight) and on the other hand the system for awarding rating points.

There were also seven (theoretical) leagues distributed around the world: Europe 1, Europe 2, North and Central America, South America, the Middle East, Asia / Australasia and Africa. However, since there were no corresponding Nations Cup tournaments in Asia / Australasia, Africa and South America, only four leagues were organized.

Valuation points were awarded at each Nations Cup in the series. The points system revised for the 2014 season was used:

space 1 2 3 4th 5 6th 7th 8th 9 10 Further
Points 100 90 80 70 60 55 50 45 40 35 no points

The number of Nations Cups at which the teams can collect points differed depending on the league: In the Europa League 1, each national association had to select six Nations Cups at the beginning of the season. The four best results of each team (at the selected Nations Cups) were included in the overall ranking. In the other leagues, a previous determination was not necessary; in the Europa League 2, a maximum of the points collected for four nations' prizes in this league counted per team.

The Nations Cup for the 2017 season ran from mid-February to early September. A final tournament was held at the end of the season. Barcelona was chosen as the venue for the fifth time in a row. Eighteen teams qualified for the final: seven from Europe 1, two from Europe 2, two from North and Central America, two from South America, two from the Middle East, two from Asia / Australasia and one team from Africa. If the host country did not qualify for the finals, it should start as the 19th team.

Middle East League

This season, too, the Middle East League only included one special stage, the United Arab Emirates' Nations Cup. The CSIO  5 * tournament President of UAE Show Jumping Cup took place in Al Ain from February 15 to 18, 2017.

The Nations Cup was held on Thursday afternoon (February 16). After the first round, France, Italy and Qatar were tied with four penalty points. The French managed to finish the second round without further penalty points, so that the victory went to France as in the previous year. The best team from the Middle East League was Qatar, and the team from the United Arab Emirates also qualified for the season finale in Barcelona.

North and Central America League

As in previous years, the tournament calendar of the North and Central American League (full name: North and Central America & Caribbean Division ) comprised three Nations Cup tournaments, all of which were held in the first half of the year.

1st test: United States

For the third year in a row, the US Nations Cup took place in the self-proclaimed Horse Capital of the World , Ocala . The CSIO 4 * tournament was held at the HITS Post Time Farm as the fifth week of the Ocala Winter Circuit tournament series held here from February 16 to 21, 2017.

The level of the participating teams differed significantly in the Ocala Nations Cup: While four teams got results between four and twelve penalty points in the first round, the teams from El Salvador and Venezuela were largely overwhelmed with the course. The victory went to Ireland with a total of 12 penalty points.

2nd test: Mexico

The venue for the Mexican Nations Cup tournament was the Club Hipico Coapexpan in Xalapa . The CSIO 4 * tournament was held from May 4th to 7th, 2017, the Nations Cup itself was on the program on May 5th from 1:30 p.m. local time.

After their historic success in the previous year , the (first) Mexican team won again in 2017. The Mexicans didn't even need to start their last rider in the second lap, as they were already in the lead.

3rd exam: Canada

For the second time, one of Canada's two Nations Cup tournaments took place in Langley (British Columbia). This CSIO 4 * tournament was held from May 31 to June 4, 2017 in the Thunderbird Show Park, where world cup tournaments have been held for years .

The Nations Cup, which counts for the North and Central American League, took place on the afternoon of June 2nd. After the first lap it looked like a clear victory for the United States team, which was 10 penalty points ahead. But with three flawless laps Canada caught up clearly in the second lap, the US team won the test by just one penalty point. As in Xalapa, Mexico competed with two teams, of which only the first counted for the Nations Cup ranking.

Overall ranking of the North and Central American League

With one win and two second places, the teams of the United States collected the most points in the North and Central American leagues and thus secured a starting place at the Nations Cup final in Barcelona. The decision about second place on the grid was tight: Canada did not win any of the three Nations Cups, but still got 10 points more than Mexico.

European League 1

After four years with ten teams, the number of nations in the Europa League 1 ( Europe Division 1 ) was reduced to eight again. As a result, three teams were relegated at the end of the preseason.

The qualification rules for the 2017 season were clearer than in the previous year:

  1. The teams from last year's Europa League 1 (Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, France and Italy) who were in positions one to seven in the overall ranking of the previous year
  2. The top ranked teams from Europa League 2 at the Nations Cup Final 2016 (Spain)

1st test: Belgium

The start of the Nations Cup season in Europe took place at the Belgian Nations Cup tournament in Lummen . After the tournament had to be almost completely canceled in the previous year due to heavy rainfall, it took place regularly from April 26th to 30th, 2017.

The Nations Cup was held on Friday (April 28th) from 4 p.m. This competition was a special one for the second rider in the Swiss line-up: Walter Gabathuler, now 62 years old, contested his first Nations Cup here since 2005. In the first round, France took the lead, the French were the only team so far without penalty points. However, the French result increased by eight penalty points in the second round. Thus, after two rounds, the teams from France, Germany and the hosts, who were relegated to the Europa League 2, were tied with eight penalty points in first place.

In the jump-off, which was therefore necessary, Belgium started with Pieter Devos with Dream of India . A refusal early in the jump-off course robbed the Belgians of the chance of victory. For Germany, national coach Otto Becker sent André Thieme into the jump-off. With his gray gelding Conthendrix , Thieme achieved the first clear round in the jump-off. France's Chef d'Equipe Philippe Guerdat decided to let Penelope Leprevost start in the jump-off. After two clear rounds, she also made no mistakes in the jump-off with Ratina d'La Rousserie , but she did not come close to André Thieme's time. The victory thus went to the German team.

2nd test: France

The French Nations Cup tournament was held in La Baule-Escoublac from May 11-14, 2017 . The Nations Cup took place on May 12th from 2 p.m.

Sweden was in the lead after the first round of the Nations Cup without penalty points, Belgium followed in second place with only two time penalty points. While the Belgians lost contact with the leaders in the second lap with 17 penalty points, the Swedes had a good chance of victory: Henrik von Eckermann as the last rider of the Swedish team could have secured victory with a flawless lap. But unlike in the first round, he didn't succeed with Copperhild . This meant that Sweden and France were tied for first place after the second round, a play-off was necessary.

In the jump-off, Kevin Staut presented with a clear round. Sweden sent Peder Fredricson into the jump-off, but he made mistakes with Christian K , eight penalty points in the jump-off prevented victory. This went to the hosts' team.

The best team in the second round was Spain. However, since the Spaniards had by far the worst result in the first lap, it was only enough for sixth place. With that they were still one place ahead of the German team, which got a total of 29 penalty points with mixed results in both rounds.

3rd test: Italy

For the 85th time, the traditional Italian Nations Cup tournament, the CSIO Rome, took place. The event, held in the heart of the city, on Piazza di Siena in the Villa Borghese park , took place from May 25th to 28th in 2017.

The Nations Cup was held on the afternoon of May 26th. After two nations' trophies, which were decided in the jump-off, two rounds were sufficient to determine the winner in this third stage of the Europa League 1. Already after the first round Italy and the Netherlands had separated from the rest of the starting field, both teams had only received four penalty points up to this point.

In the second round, Jeroen Dubbeldam was the first rider of the Dutch to give up after having finished the first round with 26 penalty points with Zenith . The three other Dutch riders were under pressure because of the missing result, their nine penalty points were fully included in the evaluation. The course of the Italians was the other way around: the first two riders crossed the finish line without penalty points, Lorenzo de Luca as the third starter got five penalty points. Bruno Chimirri with Tower Mouche had already delivered the cancellation result in the first round and in the second round he could not match the good results of his compatriots with 13 penalty points. But due to the only five penalty points from the first three rides, it was enough for first place at the end of the test. For Italy, one of the leading nations in show jumping after the Second World War, this was the first victory in the domestic Nations Cup in 32 years.

4th exam: Switzerland

The Swiss stage of the Europa League 1 of the Nations Cup was held in St. Gallen . The CSIO Switzerland , Switzerland 's Nations Cup tournament, took place from June 1st to 4th, 2017 in the Grundmoos stadium.

At the beginning of the Nations Cup, the results indicated an extremely demanding course: the first four riders crossed the finish line with eight penalty points each, the next four received four penalty points each. But as a result there were also several faultless rides. After the first round, France was clearly in the lead with no penalty points, the hosts' team followed in second place with eight penalty points.

But the second lap, during which heavy rain showers fell, turned this result completely on its head. Germany, which had been awarded the first starting place of the teams, came in penultimate place with 13 penalty points in the first round. The first rider in the second lap was André Thieme. Thieme and his 13-year-old gray Conthendrix made no mistakes. This should not have been the last clear round for the German team, Christian Kukuk and Marco Kutscher also remained flawless with their horses. This meant that Marcus Ehning no longer had to go to the start, and Germany fought its way up to third place. The second round was extremely unfortunate for France: The first three riders of the team crossed the finish line with 12 or more penalty points. Roger-Yves Bost's flawless ride at the end prevented the French from falling even further, so it was sixth place in the final result.

The Italians confirmed their form from the previous weekend, with a total of nine penalty points they also won in St. Gallen. The Swiss threatened to slip in the meantime in the second lap, but zero-error rides by Romain Duguet and Steve Guerdat secured second place.

5th test: Netherlands

The Netherlands Nations Cup tournament was held in Rotterdam. The CHIO Rotterdam took place for the 69th time, from June 22nd to 25th, 2017.

The show jumping Nations Cup began on June 23 at around 3 p.m. The first round was uneventful, 20 of 30 rides remained without errors, two riders no longer had to start for their team. The intermediate result after the first round was that four teams (Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland and Germany) were in the lead without penalty points, the other four teams shared fifth place with four penalty points. The time allowed was not a problem, none of the participants received time penalties.

Since both rounds of a Nations Cup have to be basically identical, the course designer Louis Konickx only had the option of increasing the height of the obstacles and the depth (width) of the oxer between the rounds. He made use of both options, which also had an impact on the results: While five of the first eight riders in the second round remained without errors, rides with errors increased. A number of riders received eight penalty points, including three riders from the German team. Part of this team was the 23-year-old German female show jumping champion, Laura Klaphake, who contested her first Nations Cup after her young rider time here.

Despite the absence of Rolf-Göran Bengtsson (due to the suspicion of an injury to his stallion Clarimo ) and thus the lack of a strike result, the Swedes got a final result of only four penalty points. Martin Fuchs went into the second lap as the last starter, with a clear lap from him Switzerland could have ridden for victory in a jump-off against Sweden. But Fuchs made a mistake with Clooney , these four penalty points let Switzerland fall back to second place.

6th test: Sweden

At the southwestern tip of Sweden, in Skanör med Falsterbo , the Swedish Nations Cup tournament is held every year. The Falsterbo Horse Show took place from July 13th to 16th, 2017.

The show jumping Nations Cup started on Friday (July 14th) at 2:30 p.m. Norway and the United States of America started as visiting teams from other lying areas. After the first round, Ireland and the Netherlands were both in the lead without penalty points. Germany, Sweden and the United States followed closely behind with four penalty points each.

In the second round the first two Dutch riders each made an obstacle error, so that at least four penalty points were added to the team account. The Irish could still hope for their third and fourth riders after Cian O'Connor had received four penalty points. But Mark McAuley also got four penalty points, so that already after the third rider there was a lot to be said for a jump-off for the victory: The United States, Ireland, the Netherlands and Germany now had the chance to go into a jump-off for victory with another faultless ride get. After their third rider Adrienne Sternlicht had already collected twelve penalty points, the United States received a further eight penalty points from Alison Robitaille (formerly Alison Firestone). The three remaining teams, on the other hand, achieved the required error-free rides.

In the jump-off, Markus Beerbaum and Comanche had to start as the first rider . For Markus Beerbaum, Falsterbo was the first Nations Cup start in over ten years and the first active Nations Cup together with his wife Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum in 13 years. He rode a brisk lap and finished with no mistakes in 47.80 seconds. Denis Lynch tried to get a better time for Ireland, in which, after the second jump of the jump-off, he turned away in front of a wall obstacle for a double combination and thus had to start at an angle from the turn. But he made a mistake in the combination. Jur Vrieling and the stallion Glasgow van't Merelsnest did better for the Netherlands . They also turned in front of the wall, but it was better to come up with a double combination. Flawlessly and faster than Beerbaum, they secured the Dutch victory.

7. Examination: United Kingdom

At the end of July, the European League 1 of the Nations Cup series made a stop in Great Britain: The Royal International Horse Show formed the framework for the British Nations Cup in show jumping. The tournament was held from July 27th to 30th, 2017.

The Nations Cup test took place on the afternoon of July 28th. After the first round, the German team was in the lead without penalty points, Brazil followed behind with four penalty points.

In the second round Brazil (which won the test) and the Netherlands got no further penalty points. For the German team, however, the round was unhappy: Nations Cup debutant Kendra Claricia Brinkop and Mario Stevens each received 12 penalty points. Marcus Ehning initially succeeded in being the last German rider to lower the overall result to 12 penalty points with a clear round (which would have been sufficient for second place). But after the ride he was disqualified after a scratch from the spur was found on his stallion Comme il faut , on which a slight bleeding could be found. This means that his result was also deleted from the first round, with Germany falling back to the penultimate place. Only Spain was further behind in the ranking with a disastrous 51 penalty points.

The departure of Ehning, who is regarded as a stylist and equestrian role model for many show jumpers, was the second time within a few weeks that the "blood rule" had to be applied in top-class jumping (Scott Brash had previously met it in the context of the Global Champions League ) . As a result, the FEI Jumping Commission made the suggestion that unintentional injuries to the rider's thigh should only result in elimination (which in the case of Ehnings would have retained the result from the first round), "minor injuries" should have no consequences. If the proposal were implemented, disqualification would only occur in the case of injuries that indicate “excessive” use of the spurs.

8th test: Ireland

Again on his usual date in August (2017 from August 9th to 13th) the conclusion of the European League 1 took place at the Dublin Horse Show. A little more than a week before the start of the European Championships in Gothenburg , the last points for this league were scored here of the Nations Cup series.

After the first round of the Nations Cup, no decision had yet been made, the best four teams were extremely close together with zero to two penalty points. While the Irish team, which had been faultless up to now, slacked off in terms of performance in the second round and fell back to fifth with 17 penalty points, the United States of America was able to maintain its zero-fault result. With this victory by a non-European team, no team was able to secure 100 points for the overall standings. France, which had shone in the first two stages of the league, but was then only able to achieve lower places, secured second place (and thus 90 evaluation points) with a result of four penalty points.

Overall ranking Europa League 1

For the final of the Nations Cup, the seven best-placed teams in the overall standings qualified from the Europa League 1. Of six previously selected nations' prizes, the best four evaluation point results are included in the evaluation.

No team dominated the league in the 2017 season. The Dutch, who achieved top results at the end of the season, came first in the overall standings. Italy, which as the " elevator team " has repeatedly belonged to the (European) top Nations Cup series in the past 10 years, but has not been at the top in show jumping for a long time, strengthened in 2017. Also thanks to their top performers Lorenzo de Luca and Alberto Zorzi, who both were able to establish themselves in the top 20 of the world rankings, they came in second place in the overall ranking. Spain came eighth as the weakest team of the season, but as hosts of the Nations Cup finals, they are just as sure to qualify for the Nations Cup final.

European League 2

All European teams that did not belong to the Europa League 1 could collect 2 rating points in the Europa League. The four best results from each nation went into the overall ranking.

The Europa League 2 comprised seven special stages in 2017. In March of that year, the league's calendar had to be revised again: The Danish Nations Cup tournament changed location, the Nations Cup tournaments in Celje (Slovenia) and Budapest (Hungary) were canceled. In return, the Drammen Nations Cup was included in the Europa League 2 and the CSI "Réiser Päerdsdeeg" was upgraded to the Luxembourg Nations Cup tournament.

Overall ranking Europa League 2

For the Nations Cup final, the two best-placed teams from the Europa League 2 qualified, with a maximum of four results per team being included in the ranking. After Ukraine, which dominated the previous year and was characterized by diplomatic entanglements for its patron Oleksandr Onyshchenko , no longer competed in the Nations Cup, Belgium was clearly the best team of the 2017 season. The relegated from the European top league won two stages and finished two more stations second place. Great Britain followed in second place with a clear gap as the second relegated team last year. The other nations up to ninth place were close together with 140 to 180 points.

final

General

Barcelona is also the venue for the fifth year since the re-introduction of the Nations Cup final . As part of the CSIO Barcelona , the final will be held from September 28th to October 1st 2017 on the grounds of the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona . The final tournament is already under the patronage of the title sponsor of the Nations Cup from 2018 and is therefore called the Longines FEI Nations Cup Jumping Final .

The first test for all teams in the final is a jumping competition for mistakes (one round). From this test, the eight best teams qualified for the final test. That final exam is advertised as a jumping competition based on mistakes and time . Errors from the first exam are not included in the final exam. In the event of a tie in first place, the final test will be decided in a jump-off, in which three riders per team will start.

A consolation test is planned for those teams that do not qualify for the final test in the first test of the final. Like the final test, this test is advertised as a jumping competition with a one-time jump-off, but in normal circulation time only plays a role in relation to time penalties.

Teams

On the basis of the Nations Cup regulations, 18 teams qualify for the final.

From the leagues these were the following teams:

The following teams were named for the final tournament from the regions without Nations Cup leagues:

Australia refused to start, Colombia and Egypt withdrew their start. If no substitute teams from those leagues can be named, the regulations provide for the starter field to be filled with teams from the Europa League 1. Only Spain from that league was not directly qualified for the final, but as hosts they would have been eligible to start anyway (as an additional team).

Results

Qualification test

So 15 teams started in the qualifying test. Only Canada remained without penalty points. In the final exam, the eight teams made it to a result of eight penalty points in 245.68 seconds or better. European Champion Ireland, weakened by the short-term failure of Cian O'Connor's horse Good Luck , narrowly missed the final exam. Far from it, however, was host Spain, who finished last with 40 penalty points.

bIreland, like three other teams, got eight penalty points. In the event of a tie in eighth place, the regulations stipulated that the addition of the times of the three best riders of the teams were used as a distinguishing criterion. Ireland came in here on 246.17 seconds, this was the slowest time of the eight penalty point teams. Therefore, the Irish were ranked ninth.

(Excluded penalty points do not count as a crossed result for the team result)

Consolation test

The rider of the United Arab Emirates team, who is otherwise rarely found at top tournaments, achieved their greatest success of the season in the Challenge Cup, the consolation test for the teams that did not qualify for the final test. After they only came second to last in the qualifying test with 34 penalty points, they did not make a single mistake in the Challenge Cup. The team didn't even have to bring their last starter to the start, as the victory was already certain here.

Even though only one of their riders had no jumps, Ireland came second in the consolation test. The fifth place out of seven nations represented Great Britain for the entire Nations Cup season: after relegation from the European top league in the previous year, the Nations Cups of the Europa League 2 only reached middle to lower ranks and only competed because of participation all Nations Cups of the league qualified for the final. For Italy, however, the final in Barcelona was atypical compared to the rest of the season: after two Nations Cup victories, the Europa League 1 had finished in second place. In the final, however, you found yourself in the last place in the consolation test.

Final exam (Nations Cup Final 2017)

The starting time for the final examination of the Nations Cup final was Saturday (September 30, 2017) at 9 p.m. However, since a floodlight had failed and part of the course was therefore partly in darkness, the start was delayed until further notice. After an hour it was decided to build a modified course that left out the dark parts of the square. Since the floodlight then worked again, the course was set up again in its original form, and the test then started shortly before 11 p.m.

The course was highly demanding, adapted to the occasion and the prize money of 1.25 million euros. The time allowed was affordable, but the long course also tempted some riders to ride safely and thus collect time penalties. Werner Muff was the first starter to fail with the nine-year-old Daimler , while the next two starters each got eight penalty points. As the first starter for Germany, Simone Blum started with Alice . Barcelona was their first ever Nations Cup. After four penalty points in the qualification test, Blum now had no obstacle errors, but was 73 hundredths of a second too slow.

After two riders per team, the Netherlands was the only team without obstacle errors in the lead. Marc Houtzager had the chance to win the Dutchman already here, but a fallen pole and thus four penalty points during his ride prevented this. Sweden had changed the team compared to the qualifying test, Evelina Tovek was now part of the team in place of Rolf-Göran Bengtsson. Tovek had won the Global Champions Tour stage in Rome with Castello a week earlier , but luck was not with them in Barcelona. With 32 penalty points, Tovek was the clear result for Sweden. The Nations Cup was also unfortunate for Canada: After winning the undoped qualification test on Saturday, after three riders, results of nine, four and nine penalty points were available. Even a clear lap from Eric Lamaze, who was the last rider to start, could no longer prevent them from coming in eighth.

At the end of this highly successful green season 2017, Harrie Smolders once again showed a clear round with Don , which secured victory for the Netherlands. Smolders could not have allowed himself an obstacle error, as Belgium and the United States also got a total of four penalty points with clear rounds from their last rider. Five penalty points as the final result were possible for France and Germany before the last rider. After Roger-Yves Bost was disqualified in the qualifying test due to a non-compliant change to the rear gaiters (removal of a hard part of the gaiter), he and Sydney Une Prince were well on their way to a clear round. But in the final line, in the triple combination, after two obstacle errors, Bost did not get a suitable distance to the third jump. Since his result would have been the cancellation result anyway, he gave up, so that France fell back to penultimate place. Marcus Ehning also got four penalty points on the final line when he had a throw-off with Pret A Tout at the built-up water hazard in front of the triple combination. This meant that the German team fell behind Switzerland and Sweden.
