Eric Lamaze (born April 17, 1968 in Montreal , Québec ) is a Canadian show jumper and gold medalist at the 2008 Summer Olympics .

Eric Lamaze was tenth in the FEI show jumping world rankings in August 2016. From January to April 2009, in July 2010 and from June 2011 to December 2011, he was world number one.

Private

His wife Megan Johnstone-Lamaze was an international show jumper for the United States of America .

In his home town of Schomberg, Ontario , Lamaze owns the Torrey Pines Stable .

Career

Early years and doping tests

Lamaze comes from socially difficult circumstances, he left school at the age of 14. At the time, his mother was in jail for cocaine trafficking and his grandmother was an alcoholic. At the age of 15 he got the chance to work in the stable of Roger Deslauriers (father of the Canadian Nations Cup rider Mario Deslauriers ) in Bromont near Montreal, where he worked for three years. During this time he was successful in the junior age group, and from 1992 he started at major riding tournaments. In 1993 he took part in a Nations Cup for Canada for the first time. In 1994 he took part in the World Equestrian Games for the first time , in that year he also finished second in the Canadian World Cup league.

Just before the 1996 Olympics , Lamaze tested positive for cocaine. This led to his being removed from the Canadian Olympic squad and initially banned for four years. Lamaze was able to show, however, that this was not a question of influencing athletic performance, but that it was a private problem. The suspension was then shortened to seven months and Lamaze was given a second chance by the association. Shortly before the 2000 Olympic Games , he tested positive again, this time for the substance ephedrine . As a result, he was banned from all equestrian activities for life. Lamaze announced that the positive sample was from a food additive that was not properly labeled. This has been confirmed by the manufacturer. The ban was then lifted. As a result, Canada's Olympic Federation had all potential Olympians confirm that they were not using any prohibited substances. As part of this campaign, Lamaze was personally asked to undergo another doping control. As in 1996, this was positive for cocaine. His attorney argued that the lifelong ban on ephedrine should not have been issued. This is also the reason for the renewed use of cocaine. This should not be sanctioned either, since Lamaze was no longer subject to the regulations of the Olympic Federation of Canada during the first ban. The attorney's statements also referred to the difficult childhood of his client and his depression. As a result, the second lifelong ban, imposed because of the renewed cocaine use, was lifted.

Years of Success and Loss

Eric Lamaze with Hickstead at the 2008 Hong Kong Olympic Equestrian Competition

Lamaze had great success with the acquisition of his successful horse Hickstead . From 2005, Lamaze and Hickstead took part in a number of important international competitions and championships, crowned by winning the individual gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics .

A week after the Pan American Games in 2011, Lamaze and Hickstead took part in the World Cup in Verona, Italy. Immediately after completing the course, the horse collapsed and died on site of an acute aortic rupture . As a result, the exam was stopped and there was a minute's silence. A few days later, Lamaze talked about his sporting future:

There are two options: Either I give up and leave the rest of the horses to my stable colleagues. Or I fight ... We choose this sport because we love it. But we also choose it because we love these animals. When riding, it's not like breaking a golf or tennis racket. We all lost a family member. Hickstead meant everything to me and changed my life. "

Career after 2011

In 2012 Lamaze was nominated again for the Olympic Games. At the Summer Games in London he reached the 29th place in the individual standings with Derly Chin de Muze and fifth in the team standings. Eric Lamaze is still the internationally most successful Canadian show jumper, even if he is no longer one of the top ten riders in the world rankings.

successes

Championships and World Cup

Lamaze achieved the greatest success of his career with his first participation in the Olympic Games in 2008 . Here he won an individual gold medal with the horse Hickstead , the first ever Canadian rider. A few days earlier he had won the team silver medal for Canada together with Mac Cone , Jill Henselwood and Ian Millar .

At the Pan American Games he was able to occupy third place with the Canadian team in 1999; In 2007 he achieved silver with the team and bronze in the individual standings with Hickstead .

Lamaze also participated in the 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Equestrian Games . Here, however, he could not record any successes (best team placement: 1994 - 7th place, best individual placement: 2006 - 27th place). At the World Equestrian Games in 2010 he won bronze with Hickstead in the individual standings, in the team standings the Canadian team reached rank 5. At the Pan American Games 2011 he and Coriana van Klapscheut reached fourth place in the team standings and 11th place in the individual standings. At the Pan American Games in Toronto in 2015 , he and Coco Bongo were part of the Canadian team that won the team silver medal.

On his third participation in the Olympics, he missed the bronze medal with the Canadian team in the jump-off, but in the individual competition he won bronze with Fine Lady .

When he took part in the World Cup finals in 2005, he was sixteenth with Tempete van het Lindehof . Six years later he finished the World Cup final in Leipzig with Hickstead in 2nd place.

Outstanding Great Prices

Lamaze, who is a regular at the tournaments in his native Spruce Meadows , won the Grand Prix of the CSIO 5 * Spruce Meadows Masters, America's most important Grand Prix , in 2007 with Hickstead .

Three years later, in 2010, Lamaze flew to Europe for several tournaments with his top horse Hickstead directly after several tournaments in Spruce Meadows, of which he won the last one (at CSI 5 * level). Here he started directly at the CHIO Aachen and won the most important European Grand Prix with Hickstead with the Grand Prix of Aachen (CSIO 5 *). During the first lap of the Aachen Grand Prix, Lamaze heard a click on a landing, subsequently it turned out that he had completed the second lap and the sting with a broken foot.

In 2014, he managed to win the Grand Prix of the Nations Cup tournaments in La Baule and Rome. At the CHIO Aachen 2016 he won the two classics "Prize of Europe" and "Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia" with the mare Fine Lady, who had been taken over by Holger Wulschner two years earlier . With regard to the mare's start at the Olympic Games, Lamaze decided not to start at the Aachen Grand Prix.

Lamaze was voted Rider of the Year in 2010 and 2011 by members of the International Jumping Riders Club. In addition, he and Hickstead were voted CBC Sports Athlete of the Year 2011 with more than 50 percent of the vote .
