The dark brown stallion Hickstead (* March 1996 ; † November 6, 2011 ) was a show jumping horse that was considered one of the most successful horses in show jumping at the time of his death .

General

In the history of show jumping, Hickstead is one of the most lucrative show jumpers of all time with total prize money of over 4,000,000 US dollars . He was introduced in the sport by Eric Lamaze , his owners were the Ashland Stables from Wellington (Florida) and the Torrey Pines Stable of his rider in Schomberg (Ontario), Canada . In 2009 and 2010, Hickstead was according to the list of the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (World Association of Sport Horse Breeding Associations, WBFSH for short ) the most successful show jumping horse worldwide.

In 2008 he was named "Horse of the Year" in the Netherlands. He was also posthumously voted CBC Sports Athlete of the Year 2011 , together with Eric Lamaze, with more than 50 percent of the vote .

Life

Early years

Hickstead was born under the name Opel in 1996 at the breeder Jan van Schijndel in Maren-Kessel, the Netherlands. His breeder, who died in 2010, described him as very chic but not very big. At the age of four months he was sold to Rinus de Jong, with whom he stayed until the age of two.

At the age of two he was sold to Conny van Stokkum, who prepared him for the licensing of the Dutch Riding Horse and Pony Studbook (Nederlands Rijpaarden en Pony Stamboek, or NRPS for short). In preparation for this, his name was also changed: As a licensed stallion, his name would have to begin with the first letter of his father's name. Since Hickstead's owner was a fan of the tournaments on the tournament facility of the same name , this name was chosen.

In his first years as a breeding stallion , Hickstead covered around 40 mares a year. At the age of six he was sold to the sponsor of Gerard Franssen, Franssen's son rode him in a row in tests up to a height of 1.35 meters. As a result, there were several expressions of interest, but the purchase failed due to the size of the stallion.

The "big sport"

Eric Lamaze and Hickstead first met in the Stephex Stables in Wolvertem , Belgium . Lamaze was looking for new horses in Europe; he too initially thought Hickstead was too small and the asking price was too high. Since his further search was unsuccessful, he returned to Wolvertem, where he was convinced to purchase Hickstead. Back in North America, Hickstead quickly proved to be a successful jumper, with first victories in spring 2005.

In the years that followed, Hickstead became Lamaze's success horse. The first Nations Cup participation followed and with third place in the Grand Prix of Aachen in 2006, a first world-class success. The next year brought another career highlight with it, winning the 1,000,000 Canadian dollar CN International Grand Prix at the Spruce Meadows Masters in Calgary.

From victory to victory

2007 saw Lamaze's first participation with Hickstead in an international championship, the Pan American Games . Here the two achieved the silver rank with the team and won bronze in the individual ranking - a clear recommendation with regard to the Olympic Games. This was confirmed at the 2008 Olympic Games : after winning team silver, Lamaze and Hickstead secured individual Olympic gold.

In the next few years, numerous placements and victories up to CSI 5 * level followed. Outstanding here was the 2010 Aachen Grand Prix: Directly after several tournaments in Calgary, of which he won the last (CSI 5 *) Grand Prix with Hickstead, both started at the most important European Grand Prix in Aachen. During the first lap of the Grand Prix, Lamaze heard a click on a landing, subsequently it turned out that Lamaze had completed the second lap and the stab with a broken foot. Despite this injury, both won the exam.

At the World Equestrian Games a few months later, Eric Lamaze and Hickstead achieved fifth place in the team ranking and bronze in the individual ranking, with Hickstead being the best horse in the final horse change.

The first highlight of 2011 for Lamaze and Hickstead was the World Cup final in Leipzig , which both finished in second place. In the summer, she won the Grand Prix of the CSIO 5 * Nation Prize Tournament in Rome. In September 2011, Eric Lamaze and Hickstead were able to repeat the victory in the CN International Grand Prix in Calgary, it was the last victory for Hickstead in an international grand prix.

The end

After winning in Calgary, Hickstead was given a tournament break and was brought to Europe in early November 2011. Here he took part in the CSI 5 * World Cup tournament in Verona for the first time. Lamaze used Hickstead in the World Cup test . After completing the first round, Hickstead collapsed under his rider and died shortly afterwards. As a result, a minute's silence was observed, at the request of the riders, the test was then canceled.

We are shocked. This horse has been the measure of all things in recent years. "

" Hickstead really was a horse in a million and my heart goes out to Eric and everyone connected with this wonderful horse. This is a terrible loss, but Hickstead truly will never be forgotten. We were very lucky to have known him. (Hickstead was really unique. My heart goes out to Eric and everyone who has had to do with this wonderful horse. It's a terrible loss, but Hickstead will really never be forgotten. We were very happy to have known him.) "

- Haya bint al-Hussein , President of the FEI

The exact cause of death was subsequently determined through an autopsy. As previously suspected, Hickstead died of an acute aortic rupture .
