The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) and the International Federation of Equestrian Sports is the international umbrella organization of equestrian sport based in Lausanne ( Switzerland ).
tasks
The organization is organizer of all international tournaments , which by its members aligned to. In particular, this means that it decides on competition and qualification rules at the World Equestrian Games and the Olympic Games . Medical care and doping tests at international tournaments are also the responsibility of the FEI.
The national competition events of the members are organized by the relevant national federation, called Fédération Equestre Nationale (FN). The FEI has no control over this. In the event of extreme violations, however, the associations can be suspended, for example the national association of the United Arab Emirates was suspended indefinitely in March 2015 due to significant irregularities relating to the endurance competitions there.
In the interest of optimal competition preparation for international tournaments, the national competitions are also organized by the national associations according to regulations based on those of the FEI. Nevertheless, there are definitely differences in the judging procedure (for example, in show jumping, a time penalty is awarded for every four seconds or part thereof in show jumping, while a quarter penalty point per second or part thereof is charged at national tournaments in Germany). One of the most noticeable differences for the athletes are the deviating doping and medication regulations.
The German national federation is the German Equestrian Association . Its Austrian counterpart is the Austrian Equestrian Federation (OEPS), while the Swiss Equestrian Federation (SVPS) is responsible for Switzerland .
An important goal of the FEI is the fair and gentle treatment of the horse in all competitions, which contributed to a significant defuse of the cross-country ride at the Olympic Summer Games 2004 compared to previous Olympic Games. The FEI has drawn up a code of conduct , the FEI's Code of Conduct . It includes monitoring the health and well-being of participating horses in tournaments / competitions and respecting the principles of equestrianism .
FEI Presidium
So far (as of 2017) there were 14 presidents, with Karel V. Quarles van Ufford being the only president to hold this office twice. Recently, a presidency may only last a maximum of two terms. Ingmar De Vos from Belgium has been President of the FEI since 2014 . Dieter von Landsberg-Velen , the former president of the German Equestrian Association, was vice-president for many years.

An international tournament - called Concours International (CI) - has a certain designation determined by the FEI in the General Regulations , depending on the disciplines played . The disciplines approved by the FEI are dressage , show jumping , eventing , reining , endurance riding , vaulting , driving (team driving) and equestrian sports for the disabled .
The tournaments are classified by stars after the CI abbreviation. The number of stars represents the level of difficulty and the prize money - and thus indirectly the strength of the competition. The more stars, the higher the requirement. The maximum is different for each CI. For example, a CVI has a maximum of four stars (CVI ****), a CSI a maximum of five (CSI *****).
Each country is allowed to host an official international tournament once per year and discipline, the name of which is expanded to include the word Officiel . A Concours International Officiel must contain the official competitions for the respective discipline for both the individual and the team competition.
International championships and tournament series of the FEI
Olympic and Paralympic Games
Show jumping, dressage and military (today eventing) have been part of the Olympic disciplines since 1912. Dressage has also been part of the Paralympic disciplines since 1996.
World, continental and regional championships
The FEI holds world, continental and regional championships in all FEI disciplines and all ages.
These include, for example, the following tournaments:
- the individual world championships of the Olympic equestrian disciplines , since 1990 within the framework of the World Equestrian Games
- World and European championships in vaulting
- World championships in four- in-hand driving , endurance riding and para-dressage ( handicapped riding ), held every four years as part of the World Equestrian Games and every two years in between as an independent event
- World championships for singles and pairs ( driving )
- World championships in para-driving (team driving for drivers with disabilities)
- World championships for young dressage, show jumping and eventing horses, these are held annually
The FEI has been organizing the World Equestrian Games since 1990. In the mid-1980s, the idea was strongly promoted by the then FEI President Philip Mountbatten. At the World Equestrian Games, world championships in almost all FEI disciplines are held every four years.
Tournament series
The tournament series with the longest tradition carried out by the organization is the Nations Cup of Show Jumping , whose origins go back to 1909. Today there are also Nations Cup series in dressage and eventing .
The FEI has recognized further tournament series - including the Global Champions Tour , the Riders Tour , the European Youngster Cup for riders up to 25 years of age, the Masters League and also the Grand Slam for show jumpers .
World cup
The FEI World Cup tournament series began with show jumping in 1978 and was gradually expanded to include dressage, eventing, driving and, most recently, vaulting. While the World Cups in dressage and show jumping in Western Europe are purely indoor sports, in the rest of the world, like the other World Cup series, they take place as open-air events. Only the competitions of the Vaulting World Cup, which is limited to Europe, take place entirely in the hall.
- FEI World Cup in show jumping
- FEI World Cup in dressage
- FEI World Cup in eventing
- FEI World Cup in four-in-hand driving
- FEI World Cup in vaulting
