Grand Slam of show jumping

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Grand Slam of Show Jumping (Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping) combines the grand prizes of four of the most important show jumping tournaments in the world:

To win the Grand Slam, a rider must win the grand prizes from three of these tournaments in direct succession.

Scott Brash was the first rider to win the Grand Slam. He won the three consecutive main tests of the CHI Geneva 2014, CHIO Aachen 2015 and Spruce Meadows "Masters" Calgary 2015 tournaments on Hello Sanctos .

Following the example of the Rolex Grand Slam, the Longines Masters Grand Slam Indoor of Show Jumping was created in 2015, which combines three indoor riding tournaments (New York, Paris-Villepinte and Hong Kong). The regulations and prize money are based on the Rolex Grand Slam.

founding

Together with Rolex , the organizers of the CHIO Aachen, the CSIO Spruce Meadows "Masters" and the CHI Geneva developed the Grand Slam for show jumping . The traditional Grand Slams in tennis and golf served as models . The concept of the show jumping Grand Slam is based on the Grand Slam in eventing, which has been announced since 1999 . Both Grand Slams are sponsored by the watch manufacturer Rolex. Rolex has been one of the major sponsors of equestrian sport for years, especially at the Grand Slam tournaments.

The Rolex Grand Slam for show jumpers was presented to the public and the media on April 26, 2013 as part of the World Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden - with the comment that the number of equestrian events involved could be increased to a total of five. At the 50th Indoor Brabant event in March 2017, it was announced that the tournament would also be part of the Rolex Grand Slam from 2018.

The targeted promotion of young talent is also part of the Rolex Grand Slam. Two young riders are invited to each of the three tournaments - in order to gain experience at the highest level.

Prize money and regulations

The three Grand Slam tournaments are among the most highly endowed events in show jumping, the CHIO Aachen and the Spruce Meadows “Masters” each have the highest endowment of an equestrian tournament in their nation.

In addition to this prize money, there is the possibility of getting the following bonuses:

  • With four consecutive victories, a rider wins another million euros in addition to the Grand Slam bonus, for a total of two million euros
  • A rider wins the Grand Slam (victory of the three Grand Prizes in succession) and receives a bonus of one million euros or
  • A rider wins two Grand Prizes one after the other and receives a bonus of 500,000 euros or else
  • A rider wins two grand prizes in the same cycle and receives a bonus of 250,000 euros.

The riders can start with different horses at the Grand Prix. A first victory opens a “personal” Grand Slam, the calendar year is not decisive. The Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping cycle is indefinite. A rider must participate in all three stages of the cycle in order to qualify for a bonus.

With his victories in the Geneva Grand Prix in 2014 and Aachen 2015, Scott Brash was the first rider to win a bonus of 500,000 euros in the show jumping Grand Slam. Marcus Ehning achieved a 250,000 euro bonus with his victories in the Grand Prix of Aachen and Geneva in 2018.
