Le Grand-Saconnex is a municipality in the canton of Geneva in Switzerland .

history

Le Grand-Saconnex came under the rule of Bern in 1536 . From 1601 it belonged to France . In 1815 the community went to Switzerland to the canton of Geneva.

In the 1960s, the community experienced great growth, a suburban center emerged between the city and Geneva Airport ( French Aéroport International de Genève ) in the Cointrin district . Le Grand-Saconnex shares the latter with the municipality of Meyrin . Many organizations and the Palexpo exhibition complex have their headquarters in Le Grand-Saconnex .

Saconnex was mentioned in 1128 as Sacunay and in 1215 as Saconai .

The legislative power is exercised by the municipal council (conseil municipal) . It has 27 seats and is elected directly by the people every five years using proportional representation with a 7 percent hurdle. The municipal council determines the city budget and votes on submissions from the city government (conseil administratif) . He can also launch initiatives himself.
