Vernier is a municipality in the canton of Geneva in Switzerland .

geography

Vernier is located north of the Rhone . The neighboring communities are Satigny , Meyrin , Le Grand-Saconnex and Geneva .

The two tallest buildings in the canton and the longest residential building in Europe, which is 1060 meters long, are located in the Le Lignon district . Originally created in the 1960s for 10,000 people, around 5,500 people still live there today. A second residential complex, which today has 5700 inhabitants, is hardly smaller, is Les Avanchets .

In Châtelaine, some United Nations organizations are housed in the Maison Internationale de l'Environnement (MIE; French for International Environment House ), such as the headquarters of the United Nations Institute of Education and Research (UNITAR) , the department of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Europe Department of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and other organizations primarily concerned with environmental protection.

Vernier is the second largest city in the canton of Geneva. 45% of all residents are foreign nationals. 61% of all residents have a foreign passport (47% foreigners plus 14% dual citizens). 13% of the Swiss are naturalized. Of the foreigners, 12% are of Portuguese and 12% of Italian origin. 38% of the residents there are Swiss citizens by birth.

The legislative power is exercised by the municipal council (conseil municipal) . It has 37 seats and is elected directly by the people every five years using proportional representation with a 7 percent hurdle. The municipal council determines the city budget and votes on submissions from the city government (conseil administratif) . He can also launch initiatives himself.
