Mouvement citoyens genevois

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mouvement citoyens genevois ( German  Geneva citizens' movement , Italian Movimento dei Cittadini Ginevrini ) is a right-wing populist protest party in the Swiss canton of Geneva . Under the name Mouvement citoyens romands , the party tried to become active in other cantons in French-speaking Switzerland at the beginning of the 2010s , but was unsuccessful.

history

The Mouvement citoyens genevois (MCG) was founded on June 6, 2005 by the former SVP member Georges Letellier and the former LPS politician Éric Stauffer as a local patriotic protest party. In the cantonal elections on October 9, 2009, the MCG reached 17 of the 100 seats in the Grand Council of Geneva, making it the second largest party in the canton of Geneva.

After these successes, the MCG announced that it would become active in all of French-speaking Switzerland. Small sections were then founded in the cantons of Vaud and Neuchâtel . The Mouvement citoyens vaudois ran in Lausanne and Yverdon-les-Bains in spring 2011 , but only got 1% of the vote and no seats. It was just as unsuccessful in the Vaudois Grand Council elections on March 11, 2012. The Neuchâtel MCR section achieved around 3% of the votes in the elections to the Neuchâtel city parliament in May 2012 and also remained without seats. These sections no longer exist.

In the Swiss parliamentary elections in 2011 , the MCG achieved 9.8% in the canton of Geneva. Although it remained well below its results in the cantonal elections, Mauro Poggia was the first to provide a national councilor . In the canton of Vaud, where the Mouvement citoyens romands had also submitted a list, it received only 0.5% of the votes.

In the Geneva cantonal elections 2013, the MCG achieved 19.23% of the votes cast and won 20 seats (+ 3); it remained the second strongest party after the FDP . With Mauro Poggia , the MCG has since provided a member of the seven-person Geneva executive. On the occasion of the Swiss parliamentary elections in 2015 , the MCG was able to defend its seat with losses. Despite the re-election of State Councilor Poggia, the cantonal elections of 2016 brought the MCG heavy losses, and in the National Council elections of 2019 it lost its only seat in the national parliament; the incumbent National Councilor Roger Golay was not re-elected.

Political positions

The MCG sees itself in the political spectrum as neither left nor right. The party is also known for its populist positions in the form of aggressive campaigns against cross-border workers from neighboring France and immigrants . In contrast to its direct competitor SVP, the party takes left-wing positions on social issues.
