history

Company location in Vernier (around 1930)

Givaudan was founded in Zurich in 1895 by Léon and Xavier Givaudan . In 1898 the company moved to Geneva and set up a factory in Vernier. The Givaudan Group can be traced back to the year 1796, when the company Dodge & Olcott Inc. was founded in the USA by taking into account the acquisitions and mergers of companies. In 1946, Givaudan opened a perfume school that trained a third of the world's perfumers. In 1948, Esrolko SA took over, giving Givaudan a foothold in the flavor industry. 1963 Givaudan was acquired by Roche and in 1964 Roche acquired Roure, a competitor of Givaudan. Roure was founded in Grasse, France in 1820. In 1937 Roure developed the first designer perfume: Schocking for Schiaparelli. Givaudan's first US fragrance headquarters, in Teaneck, New Jersey, was built in 1972 to a design by Der Scutt, the architect of the Trump Tower . The company later moved to East Hanover, NJ .

World market shares for flavors and fragrances 2015

Givaudan Roure

In 1991 Givaudan and Roure were merged to form Givaudan-Roure. The company also bought Fritzsche, Dodge and Olcott in 1991. In 1997, Givaudan-Roure took over another flavor maker, Tastemaker, based in Cincinnati (USA). The merger made Givaudan the largest producer of flavors in the world. In 2000, Givaudan-Roure was spun off from its parent company Givaudan and listed on the Swiss stock market, where it is part of the SLI.

2000s

In 2002, Givaudan took over FIS, the flavors division of Nestlé , for which Nestlé received a 10% stake. The following year Givaudan bought cheese flavor maker IBF. The purchase also included the Maggi site in Kemptthal . In 2004 the company expanded its operations in China, where it has been active since the 1990s.

On November 22, 2006, the company announced the acquisition of Quest International, which should be completed in the first quarter of 2007. On February 21, 2007, the EU cleared the merger of Givaudan and Quest, removing the last regulatory hurdle for the merger after the United States authorities approved the merger earlier this month. The merger agreement was signed on March 2, 2007. The acquisition makes Givaudan a global leader in both luxury perfumery and consumer products. It was already the world leader in flavors and the acquisition of Quest International helped it build on its position. The acquisition of Quest boosted Givaudan's sales by 42%, from CHF 2,909 million to CHF 4,132 million in 2007. On September 19, 2011, Givaudan was re-listed in the Swiss Market Index (SMI).

In 2013 Nestlé sold its stake in Givaudan for $ 1.3 billion. In 2014, the company had revenues of approximately $ 4.6 billion. That year, the company made its first acquisition since Quest with the purchase of Soliance. Givaudan also needed the TasteSolutions Richness range of flavors to market. The Givaudan Foundation was also established and a program called the Innovative Naturals Program was launched, which works with Patchouli and other producer networks to promote sustainable development practices.

In mid-July 2017, Givaudan announced the takeover of the Dutch company Vika, thereby strengthening the flavor segment. Vika has a workforce of 200 people and a turnover of € 64 million.

On July 10, 1976, the Seveso accident , the worst environmental disaster in Italian history, released a poisonous cloud. Italy's highest court recognized the immaterial damage caused to residents by fears. Givaudan, the parent company of ICMESA , paid EUR 103.9 million (US $ 90.3 million) in cleanup costs and compensation for those who were physically harmed by the accident.

In the 2000s, Givaudan teamed up with local communities in Guam , where the local rubber harvest is the export business. The cooperation promotes sustainability efforts in the benzoin trade . These efforts also led to the construction of two secondary schools to institutionalize formal education for the children of the region. There is also cooperation with local communities to protect the forest.
