Alcon is a pharmaceutical company based in Freiburg (Switzerland) and operational headquarters in Fort Worth , Texas and Geneva . It specializes in ophthalmology .

history

Alcon was founded in Fort Worth , Texas , USA in 1945 by the pharmacists Robert Alexander and William Conner, from whom the name is derived. These placed an emphasis on ophthalmology from an early age.

The company was taken over by Nestlé in 1977 , who thus entered the pharmaceutical business. In 2002 Nestlé decided to bring Alcon back onto the stock exchange as a spin-off . Alcon's shares were then listed on the New York Stock Exchange . After 24.8% of Novartis was sold in December 2008, Nestlé still held 52% of the shares in Alcon and in 2010 also sold it to Novartis. Novartis paid a total of $ 38.7 billion to Nestlé for their 77% stake in Alcon.

In 2007, Alcon employed around 14,500 people in 75 countries and had sales of US $ 5.6 billion.

On January 19, 2010, Alcon announced the purchase of three ophthalmic products from Sirion Therapeutics : The two FDA-approved preparations Durezol ® ( difluprednate ) and Zirgan ® ( ganciclovir ) as well as the global marketing rights (except Latin America) for Zyclorin ® ( Cyclosporin A ), which was in clinical development at the time.

In January 2010, Novartis announced the acquisition of a further 52% of the share capital and the intention to also acquire the 23% minority stake. After the complete takeover by Novartis, Alcon was merged with Ciba Vision and since then, together with some ophthalmic pharmaceuticals, has formed a new ophthalmic division within the Novartis Group.

On June 29, 2018, Novartis announced that it would spin off Alcon and bring it to the SIX Swiss Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange . The IPO finally took place on April 9, 2019. On the following day, Alcon was included in the Swiss Market Index (SMI).
