The Geberit AG is a globally active company in the sanitary sector with about 12,000 employees in 50 countries. The company's headquarters are in Rapperswil-Jona , Switzerland .
Company development
origin
The company was founded in 1874 by Caspar Melchior Albert Gebert in Rapperswil, Switzerland. In his installation company, he manufactured a wooden cistern in 1900. This idea and further developments in the field of toilet ceramics in England made it possible to install toilets in houses. In 1905 the cisterns were already being mass-produced. In 1952 the first plastic cistern was introduced. Geberit was registered as a brand name in 1953. The old factory building was shut down in 1962. In 1990 the Gebert Foundation for Culture was established to convert the old factory into a cultural center. After a renovation for the Rapperswil-Jona city library, the new “old factory” was inaugurated in 2014.
internationalization
Of Geberit's 29 production plants worldwide (10 ceramic plants, 12 plastics & metal, 7 plants for composite materials & metal), the one founded in Pfullendorf in Baden-Württemberg in 1955 with around 1,500 employees is the largest abroad. In order to be able to locate the Swiss company in Pfullendorf, the city of Pfullendorf built the company building, which Geberit bought five years later. The complete cistern program is manufactured here today. Geberit is one of the city's largest business tax payers.
In 1999, a high-bay warehouse with 10 fully automatic routes was built in Pfullendorf. There are over 14 truck ramps. Shipping by rail was discontinued in 2002. In January 2010, a new one was added to the logistics center already in Pfullendorf, which handles the entire European logistics. It supplies around 5,000 distributors worldwide. For the construction of the 27 million euro and 35 meter high high-bay warehouse, 1,500 tons of structural steel were used, 28,000 cubic meters of earth were moved and a total of 38,000 square meters were built over. The two high-bay warehouses have 51,000 pallet spaces. An average of 150 fully loaded trucks arrive and leave Pfullendorf every day. In 2017, Geberit completed the CHF 40 million expansion of the central logistics warehouse in Pfullendorf.
In 1997, the Gebert family sold the company to the British investment company Doughty Hanson & Co . The group management participated in the company together with other executives and was thus able to preserve the independence of the Geberit Group.
In mid-July 2017, after months of negotiations with the trade unions, Geberit announced that it would close two ceramic plants in France. Ceramic production in Digoin is discontinued and the factory in La Villeneuve-au-Chêne is closed.
initial public offering
Since 1999 the company is listed on the Swiss stock exchange SIX Swiss Exchange listed . Geberit was included in the new SMI MID Performance Index (SMIM) in November 2004. The Geberit shares are also included in the Swiss Leader Index (SLI) and, since June 14, 2012, in the Swiss Market Index (SMI).
Acquisitions
The company acquired the Chicago Faucets Company, USA, in 2002 and Mapress Holding GmbH, Germany in 2004.
In February 2015, Geberit acquired the Finnish sanitary ware manufacturer Sanitec for 9.7 billion Swedish kronor (around 1.06 billion euros).
strategy
The company rests on four strategic pillars: focus on sanitary technology, commitment to innovation, selective geographic expansion and continuous business process optimization.
For years the company has relied on the three-stage sales model or the push-pull strategy . Specifically, Geberit products are sold through wholesalers. However, the company trains more than 100,000 installers and decision-makers every year in one of the 25 training centers around the world or at external training courses.
Geberit has already received various awards for the company's innovative strength, the design of its products and its consistent focus on sustainability.
