A shower toilet is a combination of a toilet and a type of bidet that enables intimate hygiene with water. It is also known as a toilet bidet , wash toilet , wash basin or hygiene toilet . It is cleaned with a water jet at the push of a button, so that toilet paper for cleaning can be dispensed with almost entirely . Existing paper is used for drying. Most shower toilets can also clean the genital area in addition to the anus. A distinction must be made between complete shower toilets and shower toilet attachments that are mounted on conventional toilet bowls.

Shower toilets are mainly used in Asia , Turkey , Japan and Korea (there under the name Washlets ). The shower toilet is also becoming increasingly popular in Europe and here in particular in Switzerland (often under the name Closomat ). The share of shower toilets installed is around 80 percent in Japan, 30 percent in Korea, less than 5 percent in Europe (around 1 percent in Germany) and around 10 percent in Switzerland.

History and manufacturer

Closomat

The shower toilet was originally developed by the Swiss Hans Maurer (1918–2013) and marketed under the name Closomat from 1957 onwards . By the time it went bankrupt in 2007 as a result of a failed new product development, the company had sold around 100,000 units. Today, Closomat brand shower toilets are manufactured and sold by Closemo AG, which has focused on the care sector. The German Closomat GmbH is based in Hemer in the Sauerland . In Germany, too, Closomat focuses on the care and rehabilitation sector with its shower toilets and lift systems for toilets. Closomates found and are primarily found in hospitals and private households. The first competitors also came from Switzerland: In 1960, the Sanett top- mounted device from the company of the same name was created, which was liquidated in 2008.

Geberit

In 1978 the Geberit company launched the Geberella attachment and the Geberit-O-Mat complete system. Geberit is now the European market leader. The shower toilets of the Geberit AquaClean brand (Balena until 2009) are actively advertised and sold by the Geberit Group in more than 10 countries and are available in other countries. The shower toilets from Geberit AquaClean are particularly suitable for end consumers. In addition, these devices are recognized as medical aids in Germany and approved by all health and care insurance companies.

Market overview

The market for shower toilets is developing dynamically - there are currently around 45 models in four categories (as of 4/2016) available on the German market. A distinction is made between:

  1. integrated models in which the technology and the connection cables are housed in the toilet ceramics. There is also
  2. Shower toilet attachments that work universally with toilet ceramics or
  3. even those that are only suitable for a specific ceramic. Finally there is also
  4. so-called Taharet solutions: Taharet toilets are always without power. Instead of a shower stick, they have a permanently installed ball head nozzle and a tap or mixed water fitting. Taharet toilets originally come from Turkey.

In recent years, more and more design-oriented and user-friendly models have been brought onto the market, also with additional functions such as hot water and seat heating with temperature adjustment as well as jet controls for anal or ladies' showers and hot air blowers such as hand dryers . Many of these toilets even have a remote control. In this context, various media today also take the view that shower toilets represent the future toilet standard and will replace bidets. It is also argued that cleaning with water both provides more thorough intimate hygiene and is more convenient than conventional methods.

Numerous manufacturers are represented in the European market. Due to the great potential, ceramic manufacturers such as Duravit and Villeroy & Boch are also increasingly active in this market. In addition, numerous smaller manufacturers mainly offer shower toilet attachments. Technical adjustments to the regulations and standards have just been made for the German market.
