history
In 1817 Georg Friedrich Horn founded a small factory in Hornberg, which until 1842 only produced earthenware crockery . Today's logo of Duravit AG is a stylized wood grouse , which was derived from the original logo of the stoneware factory. Sanitary dishwashing ware has been manufactured since the beginning of the 20th century, under the brand name DURAVIT since 1960 . Accessories have also been part of the production program since 1982. In 1984 the majority of shares (60%) in the Alsatian company Céramique de Bischwiller were transferred to Duravit, and in 1988 the GmbH became a public limited company. In 1991, Céramique de Bischwiller became a 100 percent subsidiary. In 2017 Duravit opened its most modern ceramics factory, the Duravit Innovation and Production Center in Luohang / Chongqing. The principles of Industry 4.0 are implemented in this factory.
In 1992, Duravit opened the Schenkenzell site and has been producing bathroom furniture since then. In 1994 Duravit Sanitärporzellan Meißen GmbH started production in Meißen, Saxony . In 1999 Duravit acquired the majority in the Egyptian company Misr Tech , now Duravit Egypt . Duravit Turkey has been officially registered as a company in Istanbul since January 1, 2001 .
The acquisition of a majority stake in the Egyptian acrylic bathtub manufacturer Saniacrylic created the basis for the establishment of the new "Bathtub + Wellness" division in 2002, the products of which are developed and assembled in Germany and France.
With a joint venture agreement, the company began expanding its activities in China in 2003 and has been operating there as Duravit Chongqing Sanitaryware Co. Ltd ever since . Two years later, the newly built production and administration building in Youxi-Town (Jiangjin) near Chongqing was officially opened. Today, the former joint venture company is a 100 percent subsidiary and trades as Duravit Sanitaryware Co. Ltd. . In 2008 Duravit took over 51% of the Tunisian ceramics manufacturer Manufacture Tunisienne des Céramiques (MTC). In 2010, Duravit opened a new production site in Tarapur, India. The go-ahead for Duravit Sanitaryware Technology Co. Ltd , a new engineering and assembly plant in Shanghai, was given in 2011.
