Matteo Thun

Matteo Thun (born June 17, 1952 in Bozen ; full name Matthäus Antonius Maria Graf von Thun and Hohenstein ) is an Italian architect and designer .

Career

Matthäus Thun was born in Bolzano in 1952 as the first son of the South Tyrolean entrepreneurial family Thun (Lene and Otmar von Thun and Hohenstein), his younger brother Peter took over the management of Thun AG in 1978 .

Thun completed an architecture degree at the University of Florence , which he graduated in 1975. At the Summer Academy in Salzburg , he attended courses by Oskar Kokoschka . In 1981 he co-founded Sottsass Associati and the Memphis group . From 1983 to 1996 he taught design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna . In 1984 he founded his own studio, Thun & Partners , in Milan , where he creates interdisciplinary architecture, design and communication. In 2015 the company employed around sixty people.

Thun is married to Susanne Benger and has two children. He lives in Milan.

Awards

Thun has been awarded the “ Compasso d'Oro ” three times for first-class design. From 1990 to 1993 he was the creative director of " Swatch ". His Hotel Side in Hamburg, which he realized in collaboration with the artist Robert Wilson , was named " Hotel of the Year " in 2001 . For the 61st, 62nd and 63rd Venice Film Festival in 2004/2005/2006 he redesigned the facade of the “ Palazzo del Cinema ”.

In 2004 he received the “ Gala Spa Award ” and the “ Wallpaper Design Award ” for the “ Vigilius Mountain Resort ” in Lana , South Tyrol. It was also nominated for the “ Compasso d'Oro ” for the “ Girly ” collection (sanitary facilities) for “ Catalano ” and was inducted into the “ Hall of Fame ” in New York .

In 2005 he received the “ Panda d'Oro ” award from the WWF for the “ Vigilius Mountain Resort ” . In 2005 he received the Worldwide Hospitality Award in the category “ Best Hotel opened in the Year ” for the hotel “ Radisson SAS Frankfurt ”.
