The Compasso d'Oro (Golden Circle) is an Italian industrial design award . The award is one of the most important in this area and goes back to the Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti . It was organized from 1954 to 1963 by the La Rinascente department store chain, which specializes in clothing, cosmetics and household products . Since 1964 the prize has been awarded by the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale ( Association for Industrial Design / ADI).

The prize is intended to recognize the works of the designers who are both aesthetically outstanding and commercially successful. The award-winning objects are exhibited in the "Fondazione ADI per il Design Italiano" in the Collezione Storica del Premio Compasso d'Oro ADI in Milan. The prize is awarded by an international jury. Only items made in Italy are honored, so most of the winners are Italians. But international designers have also received awards for their products made in Italy.
