Gino Sarfatti

Gino Sarfatti (* 1912 in Venice , † 1984 in Gravedona ) was an Italian industrial designer . He is considered one of the most important designers of lights and lamps in the 20th century.

life and work

Sarfatti studied aerospace engineering at the University of Genoa . Due to financial problems he had to drop out of his studies and work as a salesman for glassware in Milan . From 1939 he worked in the field of lighting technology and founded the Arteluce company. During the Second World War he fled to Switzerland , but returned to Milan in 1945. He immediately devoted himself to rebuilding his company Arteluce. He used materials that were unusual for lamp construction at that time. As early as 1951 he had lights made of Plexiglas and used halogen lamps early on . During this time, his designs became known nationwide. At that time young Italian designers such as Franco Albini , Gianfranco Frattini , Vittoriano Vigano and Marco Zanuso worked for his company. Sarfatti's ceiling lamp 1063 from 1954 was added to its collection by the Museum of Modern Art .
