La Rinascente is an Italian chain of department stores specializing in fashion, household goods and cosmetics. Founded in Milan in 1917 by Senatore Borletti and emerged from the merger of the companies Alle città d'Italia and Magazzini Vittoria . It has been part of the Thai Central Group since 2011 .
The La Rinascente chain includes eleven department stores in Rome (2), Milan, Genoa , Turin , Florence , Palermo , Catania , Cagliari , Padua and Monza .
history
The Bocconi brothers opened a clothing store called Aux Villes d'Italie in Via Santa Radegonda in 1865, modeled on the Parisian fashion store Le Bon Marché . Soon they opened further branches, in 1877 next to the Piazza del Duomo , but towards the end of the First World War the chain was on the verge of ruin.
The Bocconi brothers sold in 1917 to the entrepreneur Senatore Borletti , who commissioned the influential poet Gabriele d'Annunzio to give the shops a new image. The poet proposed La Rinascente as the new company name , “who is being reborn”, which also echoed the rebirth of an Italian nation that suffered from widespread poverty at the end of the war.
In 2011 the Thai Central Group took over the 150-year-old traditional company at a price of 260 million euros. In February 2013 the company expanded to Denmark by acquiring the high-end department store Illum in Copenhagen .
In June 2015, Signa Holding owned by the Austrian entrepreneur René Benko sold the majority stake (50.1%) in The KaDeWe Group (formerly Karstadt Premium) to La Rinascente. It includes the Kaufhaus des Westens in Berlin, Oberpollinger in Munich and the Alsterhaus in Hamburg.
