The Central Group ( Thai กลุ่ม เซ็นทรัล , RTGS Klum Senthran ) or Central Holding , based in Bangkok ( Thailand ), is an internationally active conglomerate with a focus on retail , hotels, restaurants and real estate. It is best known for its department store chains and shopping centers. The group is owned by the Chirathivat family, one of the richest families in Thailand .

history

Tiang Chirathivat ( เตียง จิ รา ธิ วั ฒ น์ ; Chinese Jeng Nee Tiang or Cheng Ni Tiang , 鄭 汝 常  /  郑 汝 常 , Zheng Ruchang (Mandarin)), a Chinese immigrant from Hainan , began building the Central Group in 1947 . Tiang opened a trading business in Bangkok's Samphanthawong district , the Chinese district of the Thai capital. In 1956, Central Department Store opened its first department store on Wang Burapha in the Phra Nakhon downtown district . After Tiang's death in 1968, his eldest son Samrit took over the reins. Tiang had a total of 26 children from three women.

Subsidiaries

CentralWorld, Bangkok

The group’s project development subsidiary , Central Pattana , founded in 1980 , opened CentralPlaza Lardprao, the group’s first large shopping center , in 1982/1983 , which was one of the first of its kind in Thailand. Central Pattana now operates CentralWorld at the Ratchaprasong intersection in the Pathum Wan district , with a total area of ​​800,000 m², the largest shopping center in Thailand and one of the largest in the world, as well as 24 other shopping centers of the CentralPlaza and CentralFestival chains in Thailand (as of 2014).

The retail subsidiary Central Retail Corporation includes the department store chains Central Department Store , ZEN , Robinson , La Rinascente (since 2011) and Illum (since 2013) with branches in Thailand, China, Italy, Indonesia and Denmark; also smaller shopping centers and specialist markets. She is a franchisee for overseas retail chains in Thailand, u. a. Marks & Spencer , Sanrio and Muji .

Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin

The 57 hotels (as of the end of 2017) of Central Plaza Hotel pcl , another subsidiary of the group , operate as Centara Hotels and Resorts . They are located in cities and holiday regions in Thailand, the Maldives , Vietnam , Sri Lanka , Bali , Laos , China and the Arabian Gulf States . The Centara Grand Hotel right next to Central World is one of the tallest skyscrapers in Bangkok with 235 meters and 56 floors.

The Central Restaurant Group operates primarily as a franchisee for various international fast-food and system catering chains in Thailand, including KFC and Mister Donut .

In 1993 the Central Group founded the hypermarket and discounter chain Big C (Supercenter) , which has been partially owned by Central and the French Géant Casino since the Asian financial crisis of 1997 .

In 2006 the King of Thailand gave the Central Group the authority to display the royal Garuda emblem .

In 2012, after the acquisition of FamilyMart Thailand, the Central Food Retail Group organized the supermarkets and mini-markets that had previously belonged to Central Retail.

Takeover of Karstadt Premium GmbH

KaDeWe , 2013

In June 2015, the Central Group acquired three department stores in Germany: KaDeWe in Berlin, Oberpollinger in Munich and Alsterhaus in Hamburg, which were previously part of Karstadt Premium GmbH . The Central Group is now a partnership with Signa Holding of René Benko received. Through its Italian subsidiary La Rinascente, the Central Group acquired 50.1% of the KaDeWe Group (officially The KaDeWe Group ) to which the three aforementioned department stores belong, while Signa retains the remaining 49.9% of the shares. Tos Chirathivat is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Central Group

The Central Group is a family holding company of the branched family Chirathivat. This is regularly mentioned by the American Forbes Magazine as one of the top places on the list of the richest Thai people . In 2014 she was number 1 on the list with an estimated fortune of 12.7 billion US dollars, in 2015 she was only third with 12.3 billion. Due to the large number of family members, the fortune is distributed among a large number of people .

The chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Central Group has been Tos Chirathivat ( ทศ จิ รา ธิ วั ฒ น์ ), son of Samrit and grandson of Tiang Chirathivat, who was previously CEO of Central Retail Corporation. Chairman of the Board of Directors has been Suthichai Chirathivat ( สุทธิ ชัย จิ รา ธิ วั ฒ น์ ), one of Tiang's sons, since 2004. Family members are also at the top of most subsidiaries.
