KK Sanrio ( Japanese 株式会社 サ ン リ オ , Kabushiki kaisha Sanrio , English Sanrio Co., Ltd. ) is a Japanese wholesale company based in Shinagawa , Tokyo Prefecture .
The business activities are mainly the design and sale of gift items, greeting cards and books, the operation of restaurants, production, advertising and distribution of films, planning and presentation of musicals and other live performances, licensing, and the planning and operation of amusement parks. The sale of gift items generates 90% of sales and the amusement park segment 6.9%.
It is also known outside of Japan for its products that relate to the kawaii segment of Japanese culture. The best known of these are the Hello Kitty products, which account for around half of sales of one billion US dollars . Other well-known characters besides Hello Kitty are Keroppi , Badtz-Maru , Chococat and My Melody .
The company's two amusement parks in Japan are Sanrio Puroland in the Tama area and Harmonyland in Hiji .
The subsidiary KK Kokoro manufactures androids under the name Actroid , the best-known product is Repliee Q1 .
The European headquarters of Sanrio is located in Wentorf near Hamburg .
