Fast food menu at KFC

In contrast to burger- based fast-food chains such as McDonald’s and Burger King , the menu at Kentucky Fried Chicken consists primarily of deep-fried chicken , especially breaded chicken pieces such as leg and breast meat, which is still a mixture according to Harland D. Sanders ' Original Recipe from eleven spices and herbs. This recipe is considered to be one of the most famous and best kept industrial secrets.

In addition, burgers, chicken nugget- like finger food and wraps with chicken are offered. While other fast food chains mainly offer chicken dishes made from molded meat , Kentucky Fried Chicken offers almost exclusively fillet . In addition, some of the preparation, such as breading the fresh meat, takes place in the restaurant on site and there is less emphasis on frozen patties and other ready-made goods than most competitors.

The menus are different in the countries. In Germany and the USA, for example, there are coleslaw or mashed potatoes as a side dish , but in England and Ireland, for example, BBQ beans . You orientate yourself on local preferences.

In August 2019, KFC tested vegan chicken nuggets from Beyond Meat in an Atlanta store .

history

Harland D. Sanders

KFC was founded by Harland D. Sanders . He'd worked in a variety of professions when he started working at a gas station in Corbin , Kentucky at the age of 40, selling homemade food on the side. In 1930 he opened his first restaurant across from the gas station. In 1952, he began selling his secret recipe to other restaurants, charging five cents for each chicken sold. After twelve years there were already 600 restaurants that were working according to his recipe.

In 1964, Sanders sold his shares to a group of investors for $ 2 million, but he remained as an agent. In 1980 he died. In 1986, KFC was sold to PepsiCo for $ 840 million . The Zinger Burger was introduced in 1993. In 1997, PepsiCo spun off its restaurant business, and KFC, together with the restaurant chains Pizza Hut and Taco Bell , which had also been part of PepsiCo at that time, was spun off to the new parent company Tricon Global Restaurants (now Yum! Brands ) and floated on the stock exchange.

distribution

Worldwide distribution of KFC restaurants

According to their own information, there are over 20,000 KFC restaurants in more than 125 countries. The main locations are the United States with 4141 restaurants and China with 5324 restaurants. The company employs 350,000 people.

Germany

The first KFC restaurant in Germany was opened in 1968 on Hansaallee in Frankfurt . This made KFC the first American fast food brand in Germany, even before McDonald's and Burger King, which opened their first German restaurants in the 1970s. In contrast to the competition, however, for a long time there was hardly any progress with the expansion and these goals were missed several times. Although the company never withdrew from the German market, the number of branches stagnated at a relatively low level for a long time - some new openings were always offset by branch closings, so that the total number remained relatively constant. The company has only been on a growth course in Germany since the 2010s and has been able to increase sales and the number of branches significantly. In 1985 the first German KFC restaurant with a drive-in was opened. In March 2018 there were 163 restaurants in Germany.

There are free-standing restaurants, which usually have a drive-through, so-called inline restaurants, which are located in central pedestrian zones and in busy squares and shopping streets, and restaurants which are located in the food courts of shopping centers.

Austria

In Austria, a branch was opened in Vienna for the first time in 1970 , which at the time was the first branch of a US restaurant chain in Austria, but then withdrew from the Austrian market. In May 2005, Queensway Restaurants GmbH reopened a KFC restaurant in Vienna, which is located in the Millennium City Food Court . In March 2007 the first KFC flagship store was opened on Vienna's Mariahilfer Strasse . There are currently seven branches in Austria, five of which are in Vienna and one each in Linz and Graz .

Switzerland

In Switzerland , the first attempt was made in 1981 to establish a branch on Stauffacher in Zurich . After this attempt failed, a second attempt existed until 2004 in French-speaking Switzerland ; since then, KFC was no longer represented on the Swiss market. KFC only came back to Switzerland in 2017. In December was the main station of Geneva , the first KFC restaurant opened. On 14 June 2018, the first store in German-speaking Switzerland in was Bern he Shoppyland Schönbühl opened. The first branch in Ticino opened on May 9, 2018 in Mendrisio . The fourth branch opened in Volketswil on December 13, 2018 . Further branches have now been opened in Lausanne's Flon district, in Welle7 in Bern and at Zurich Airport.

United States

While the KFC brand is doing well worldwide and is experiencing strong growth, especially in Asia and Africa, it has been in crisis on its home market of the USA for years - the market share and the number of branches have continuously decreased in recent years. The main reasons for this are an outdated and uninviting branch network and a lack of innovations as well as the strong competition on the US market, which has ensured that KFC has been gaining market share to competitors such as Chick-fil-A , Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits , Church's for years Chicken and Pollo Campero loses.

Thailand

In 1984 KFC came to Thailand. A total of 500 restaurants had been opened by 2014. According to Marketing Director Thanyachete Ekvetchavit of Yum Restaurants International (Thailand), 300 restaurants are operated by Yum and the remaining 200 by its local franchisee Central Restaurants Group.

In 2017, Yum opened 60 new KFC restaurants. In August 2017, The QSR of Asia Co., a subsidiary of Thai Beverages (ThaiBev), signed a purchase agreement with Yum Restaurants International (Thailand) Co. for 252 existing KFC restaurants, some of which are under construction. With this acquisition, ThaiBev aims to expand its grocery store.

In December 2018, the 700th KFC restaurant opened in Thailand.

criticism

Critics accused a supplier of KFC of violating animal welfare and environmental protection regulations . The controversial organization PETA has launched an international campaign called "Kentucky Fried Cruelty". PETA recorded a video at a supplier Pilgrim's Pride slaughterhouse in Moorefield, West Virginia and posted the footage on its website.
