Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits , often just called Popeyes , is a fast-food chain that mainly offers poultry products , Cajun specialties and American biscuits . According to a press release by the company on June 29, 2007, Popeyes is just under the second largest fast- food chicken restaurant chain (in terms of number) with 1,800 branches, Church's Chicken (1,700 restaurants) and Chick-fil-A (approx. 1,600 restaurants) are of the order of magnitude comparable, only the market leader Kentucky Fried Chicken is much larger. Popeyes is represented in more than 40 states in the United States and 20 countries worldwide and was part of AFC Enterprises from 1993 to 2017 . Today Popeyes is a subsidiary of Restaurant Brands International , which also includes the fast-food restaurant chain Burger King .

In 1972, Al Copeland opened the first restaurant in Arabi, a borough of New Orleans , under the name “Chicken on the Run”. According to the official website, the store was selling traditional mild fried chicken; But business was so bad that the team came up with the idea of having to sell a hotter and spicier variant than their normal chicken dish if they wanted to offer something to the taste-seeking New Orleans citizen.
In 1976, Copeland began creating over 500 stores in 10 years. The chain later expanded into Texas and the surrounding states through BP Newman; in addition, there was global expansion from 1984.
In 1993 the now large chain was taken over by AFC Enterprises.
Founder Copeland died on March 23, 2008 of a malignant salivary gland tumor.
In 2017 Popeyes was acquired by Restaurant Brands International.

Surname
Copeland made it clear that the name of the chain did not come from the cartoon sailor Popeye , but from the fictional detective Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle from the film French Connection - Hot Spot Brooklyn . He was also "too poor" to put an apostrophe according to Popeye's English grammar . Because of the closeness of words to the sailor Popeye, Popeyes tried to get the rights to the figure in order to be able to advertise it. This was awarded to Popeyes after it successfully registered the name Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits in 1997.
