development

Beyond Meat Burger

Beyond Meat was founded by Ethan Brown in 2009. The company initially received grants from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers , Obvious Corporation , Cascade Investment ( Bill Gates ), Biz Stone , Humane Society, and Tyson Foods . In April 2013, the company began selling chicken substitutes under the name Beyond Chicken through the Whole Foods Market supermarket chain .

PETA named Beyond Meat Company of the Year 2013. In the same year, the product Beyond Beef was launched. The Beast Burger has been available in the United States since February 2015 and Beyond Sausage since January 2018.

Tyson Foods , the largest US meat breeding and processing company, bought five percent of the company's shares in October 2016. Since June 2018, Beyond Meat has had a second production site with the commissioning of a factory in Columbia . The company announced that same month that its products would be sold in 27,000 locations . In July 2018, distribution in 50 states was announced through Tesco in the UK, A&W in Canada and PHW in Germany. In 2018, Beyond Meat announced plans to go public in May 2019. On the first day of trading, the share gained over 150 percent. Shortly before that, Tyson Foods sold its stake.

In August 2019, Kentucky Fried Chicken tested vegan chicken nuggets from Beyond Meat in an Atlanta store . In September 2019, McDonalds also announced that it was testing a specially designed patty in 28 restaurants in Canada. In June 2020 Beyond Meat started production in Europe, in a production facility of its partner Zandbergen in the Netherlands and at the same time announced its own production in Enschede.

Products

The Beast Burger

The vegan meat substitute products mainly consist of a mixture of water, pea protein isolate and various vegetable oils. Depending on the product, different spices , flavors and other ingredients are added. The consistency is created by means of extrusion , in which ingredients are mixed, boiled under steam and pressed into shape. Compared to minced meat (with 80% meat and 20% fat ), Beyond Meat products contain just as many proteins, half of them less saturated fatty acids and no cholesterol . They do not contain gluten or genetically modified organisms . The meatless burgers require 93 percent less land, 90 percent less greenhouse gases and 46 percent less energy to produce than a burger made from beef and have a more than 99 percent reduced impact on water scarcity .

The company manufactures the following products:

  • Beyond Beef
  • The Beyond Burger (consists of 18% pea protein isolates)
  • Beyond Sausage (3 different types: Bratwurst , Salsiccia and Wurst)

Products that are currently no longer available are:

  • Beyond Chicken
  • The Beast

criticism

In 2019 Öko-Test tested the Beyond Meat burger. While the product received high marks for taste and texture, the use of flavor enhancing yeast extracts has been criticized. In addition, mineral oil components ( MOSH ) were detected in the burger .
