El Segundo is a city on the Santa Monica Bay in Los Angeles County in the US state of California , just south of the airport Los Angeles International Airport . It has 16,654 inhabitants (2010) on an area of 28 square kilometers (14.35 of which are land).
The Spanish name means “the second” and goes back to the fact that in 1911 the second Shell oil production station for California was built here.
Demographics
El Segundo is mostly inhabited by whites. According to the 2000 census, 77.6% of the then 19,970 inhabitants were white. The most common origins mentioned are German (13.5%) followed by Irish (11.5%). 12.4% of the population were born outside of the United States.
The median income was $ 83,925. 40.8% of the people living in El Segundo have a university degree that requires at least four years of study. Over half of the residents live in rented premises.

El Segundo is home to several major aircraft manufacturers , including Boeing , Raytheon , Lockheed Martin , Northrop Grumman , Aerojet Rocketdyne and The Aerospace Corporation , which is based here. Los Angeles Air Force Base and the Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC), which is responsible for the procurement of space equipment for the military, are also located in El Segundo .
There is also an oil refinery owned by the energy company Chevron , an electricity company and, adjacent to it, a large water treatment plant that Hyperion sewage treatment is planning . The well-known toy manufacturer Mattel also has its headquarters in El Segundo, and the North American headquarters of the Australian company Globe Shoes is also located here . The headquarters of the IT consulting and service company Computer Sciences Corporation , which was founded here, was relocated from El Segundo to Falls Church in Virginia at the beginning of 2008 . In addition, the satellite television provider DirecTV has its headquarters on the Imperial Highway.
In 2018 the Los Angeles Times relocated to El Segundo.
fauna
The small butterfly named after the place El Segundo Blue , in German something like 'El-Segundo-Bläuling' - Euphilotes battoides allyni was discovered in 1975 and placed under species protection just one year later. It lives in symbiosis with the 'coastal buckwheat' Eriogonum parvifolium .
