DirecTV is an American television satellite operator and program provider based in El Segundo . It is the largest pay TV operator in the world. DirecTV is owned by the DirecTV Group , which in turn is owned by AT&T , and competes with the DISH Network and local cable operators. The offer was started in 1994.

history

Stanley S. Hubbard founded the United States Satellite Broadcasting (USSB) in 1981 and was a leading proponent of direct broadcast television programs by satellite in the United States. The USSB received five frequencies from the FCC on the coveted satellite position 101 ° West. Hughes Communications , a subsidiary of GM Hughes Electronics, received an additional 27 frequencies on 101 ° West. After Hughes failed in the first attempts to offer such a service, DirecTV was founded and an agreement was reached with USSB to develop the first television satellite system. Hughes / DirecTV then turned to Thomson Consumer Electronics (under the RCA brand) to develop a satellite receiver for up to 175 channels that should get by with a 50 cm antenna. Hughes was awarded the contract to build and launch the new high-performance satellites, and USSB and DirecTV agreed that the new satellites would transmit two separate program packages: USSB's and DirecTV's. In 1994, regular satellite operations began. In 1998 DirecTV bought USSB for US $ 1.3 billion, in 1999 PrimeStar and then parts of Hughes Electronics. The first HD channels were activated in September 2007 , and DirecTV now has around 20 million subscribers (as of 2008).

Current

In 2010, a total of 19.433 million households in the USA and Canada received their programs via DirecTV. In Latin America DirecTV has 6.707 million users. DirecTV also owns the subsidiaries Sky Brazil (93 percent) and PanAmericana (100%) and has a 41 percent stake in Sky Mexico.

In May 2014, AT&T submitted an offer to acquire DirecTV. The integration into the AT&T Group took place on July 24, 2015 and thus the removal from the Nasdaq-100 index .
