Whole Foods Market Inc. is a US subsidiary of Amazon.com and the world's largest operator of an organic supermarket chain . The company was founded in 1980 in Austin, Texas by four business people with the intention of selling only "natural" foods with no artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, sweeteners and no hydrogenated fats.
Starting in 1984, more stores were opened outside of Austin (in Houston , Dallas and New Orleans ). The growth was mainly driven by mergers and acquisitions. The company now operates around 430 branches in the USA, Canada and Great Britain (as of September 2015).
The company specializes mainly in the sale of food of "natural" origin. The various articles include a .: Meat, fish, baked goods, beverages as well as personal care products and household items. According to the company, none of the foods and other products offered contain artificial additives. The branches usually offer high product quality and sometimes high-priced specialties from Europe that are not part of the usual range of a supermarket in the USA.
On June 16, 2017, Amazon.com announced the acquisition of the company, which had previously been listed on the NASDAQ under the symbol WFM, for $ 13.7 billion. After the completion of the merger control , the company was acquired by Amazon on August 28, 2017.
