Organic supermarket

An organic supermarket (proper spelling often short organic market ) is a grocery store , which specializes in the sale of "organic". This includes organically produced organic food and consumer goods. The organic supermarkets include shops with a sales area of ​​400 m² or more, which mostly purchase their goods from wholesalers. The opposite marketing concept for organic food is the direct marketing of the manufacturers at mostly cheaper prices. The chain because it is part of the organic wholesaler Dennree that also Germany-wide operating chains Alnatura and basic sell under the respective brand names of their businesses and brands to conventional dealers.

Some German organic supermarket chains merged to form the Association of Organic Supermarkets in February 2005 . This was dissolved again in December 2011. Most of the chains are members of the Bundesverband Naturkost Naturwaren (BNN).

Organic supermarket chains

In 2012 there were around 2361 natural food stores across Germany, 478 of which were organic supermarkets. The total number of specialty stores is stagnating, but the sales area is growing as the trend is towards large stores and shop extensions. In 2012, 42 small shops of up to 100 m² were closed and 41 organic supermarkets opened. Almost half of the annual net sales achieved by all organic shops in Germany come from organic supermarkets, most of which are owned by chains. The largest German organic supermarkets in terms of the number of branches are Alnatura , Denn’s and Bio Company .

Boycott

In 2019, some organic supermarket chains (including Alnatura, Bio Company, Bio Mare and Denn's) boycotted the products of the Spreewald Hirsemühle , as their boss is active in the AfD and the AfD has positioned itself against several important criteria for sustainability by denying man-made global warming .
