The different legal forms of the sales markets and administration were combined under the Bio Company GmbH on January 1, 2013. The Swiss investor Bio Development Holding AG (BDH) holds almost half of the company's shares . Wirtschaftswoche lists the company in third place among organic supermarkets in Germany after Denn’s and Alnatura , measured by the number of branches. At the end of 2018, the company presented a sustainability report for the first time.

history

On November 29, 1999, nurse Undine Paul and managing director Georg Kaiser opened the Bio Company's first organic market on Wilmersdorfer Strasse in Berlin-Charlottenburg . The Bio Company immediately joined the Fördergemeinschaft Ökologischer Landbau Berlin-Brandenburg eV . In 2001 the second organic market was opened in Berlin and in 2005 the first products of their own brand were launched. In the same year, the plastic carrier bags are abolished and replaced by bags made of paper. In 2006 the regional partner concept was introduced, which placed regional focus in the foreground, and the first store opened in Brandenburg. In 2008 the first store was opened in Hamburg and in 2011 the first in Dresden. In 2011, the Havelland organic factory, which processes meat and sausage products that are sold under its own brand, is also bought up. Bio Company has been supporting foodsharing financially and ideologically since 2012, and since 2015 it has been possible to pour the first food into your own containers and buy it at "unpackaged stations". Bio Company takes over wholesaler Midgard in 2016 and the Bio Company customer card is introduced in 2017. In the same year, Bio Company wins the Regional Star Award for its regional partner concept from the magazine Lebensmittelpraxis. From 2020 there will be no more disposable cups for drinks in the Bio Company.

Products

A full range of organic products, natural cosmetics and natural goods is sold. Bio Company operates larger areas (approx. 600 m²) as a supermarket with around 8000 different items. Small areas (approx. 350 m²) are run as city shops and local suppliers with around 5500 products. As the operator of the Biomanufaktur Havelland in Velten , the company produces meat and sausage products itself. All Bio Company stores are organic specialist stores certified by the Bundesverband Naturkost Naturwaren (BNN) and carry a full range of organic products in accordance with the BNN range guidelines.

In order to minimize food waste , Bio Company has been supporting a food sharing campaign since 2012 .

Awards and partnerships

The Bio Company received the "Regional Star 2018" from the magazine Lebensmittelpraxis and the International Green Week for its regional concept "Deeply rooted in the region". The company is a founding member of the Association for Organic Farming Berlin Brandenburg and a member of the Federal Association of Natural Foods Natural Goods (BNN). The Bio Company has been a founding member of the Alliance for Agriculture suitable for grandchildren since 2018

Bio Company works with Vern e. V. , whose goal is to increase biodiversity . In spring 2013, the company became a member of the Fair and Regional Charter.

criticism

The company was criticized in the television magazine WISO on July 3, 2012 for wage dumping . Examples of cases were reported at Bio Company. There was already criticism of the pay of trainees beforehand. A ver.di representative is quoted as saying that cashiers at Kaufland or Lidl, for example, received more wages than at Bio Company. In order to counteract the criticism, starting salaries were made public and further reports were made on wage rounds. According to media reports, as of April 2019, staff in their own supermarkets are still paid well below the industry average. The managing director Georg Kaiser informed the Handelsblatt in May 2019 that the wages for unskilled workers were about eight percent below the wage level , but overtime was recorded fairly.
