Stauffacher tram stop.

Stauffacher is the name of a tram stop in front of the St. Jakobskirche in District 4 (Aussersihl) in Zurich , at the intersection of Badenerstrasse and Stauffacherstrasse. The designation fits into the group of neighboring toponyms related to the Schwyzer Landammann Werner Stauffacher and has been applied to the entire area along the entire street section between Zweierplatz and Sihl . It roughly coincides with the older name St. Jakob ; on July 22nd, 1443 the battle of St. Jakob an der Sihl was fought there .

In 1221 there is evidence of an infirmary for lepers with a chapel under the patronage of Jacob the Disciples , which was converted into a beneficiary house (old people's home) in 1677 and remained as such until 1842. After 1820 a new cemetery with a prayer house was built on the opposite side of Badenerstrasse . The St. Jakobskirche was put into operation in 1901 instead of the prayer house.

The Stauffacher is a junction for public transport with stops for tram lines 2, 3, 8, 9 and 14 as well as the night bus line N14. There are various shops and a small shopping center, called Stauffacher-Tor , as well as the Zett-Haus around the stop . The Stauffacher should have become an important junction of the planned Zurich underground , but the project failed in a 1973 referendum.
