The first settlers settled in the place, which initially had different names and was only called Corbin in 1885 after the Reverent James Corbin Floyd . When a workshop for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad opened in Corbin and large deposits of coal and iron ore were discovered in the area, the place experienced a boom. In 1902, 102 coal mines were in operation in the vicinity. The first restaurant of the later Kentucky Fried Chicken chain was opened in 1930 by Harland D. Sanders in Corbin at a gas station. After the end of the Second World War , the demand for coal decreased and the population decreased again.
Today, Corbin is active in medium-sized industrial and commercial operations. Tourism is also gaining in importance and tours are organized to the directly adjacent Daniel Boone National Forest in the west and to the nearby Cumberland Falls .
