Big C , or Big C Supercenter Public Company Limited (PCL) ( Thai : บิ๊ ก ซี ซู เปอร์ เซ็นเตอร์ ), is a retail company based in Bangkok , Thailand . Big C is the second largest consumer market chain in Thailand to Tesco Lotus (as of 2016). In addition to Thailand, Big C is also represented in Vietnam (since 1998) and once in Laos . However, the Vietnamese branch was up for sale in 2016.

history

The company was founded by Central Group , a Chirathivat family company, in 1993 and opened its first location on Chaengwattana Road in Bangkok in 1994. Big C PCL has been listed on Thailand's stock exchange since 1995 . In 1999, the French retail group Groupe Casino was taken on board as a strategic partner through a capital increase. The Big C Foundation was founded in 2002, the foundation supports non-privileged children. The own brand Big C was founded in 2007 and the Happy Baht brand in 2008. In 2009, the Big C customer card was introduced for customer loyalty ; in 2010, 5 million cards had already been issued. In 2011, Big C took over the 42 supermarkets operated by Carrefour in Thailand, making it the second largest supermarket operator in the country. The largest shareholders until 2016 were Groupe Casino and Chirathivat Group. According to the Financial Times, Big C has more than 700 sales outlets across Thailand. In February 2016, the Casino Group sold its majority stake of 58.6 percent to the TCC Group of Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi for 3.5 billion US dollars. With this sale, Groupe Casino was able to reduce its heavy debt burden of USD 6 billion.

The Big C markets are designed for the sale of consumer goods and groceries. As of 2019, Big C will operate 153 Big C Supercenter (including Big C Jumbo and Big C Extra) and 63 Big C stores. So a total of 216 branches. There are 50 branches in Bangkok and the surrounding area and 166 in the provinces.
