Overview

The former Globus Group, which was run independently within the Migros Group until 2006, comprised magazine zum Globus AG , furniture company Interio AG and Office World AG, which specializes in office supplies . These have been run as independent companies within the Migros Group since the beginning of 2007.

The Magazine zum Globus AG operates 13 Globus department stores , six Herren-Globus stores (men's fashion) and an outlet in Switzerland , and in 2007 achieved sales of 781.3 million francs. Since spring 2018, Schild’s fashion stores, Herren-Globus specialty stores and Globus department stores have been run under the uniform premium umbrella brand Globus .

Since the beginning of 2018, around 24,000 products have also been offered in Galaxus' online department store .

history

In 1892 Josef Weber - inspired by Parisian models - founded the first large Zurich department store, the Bazar without equal , on the Papierwerd at the Bahnhofbrücke . A little later, the banker Heinrich Burkhardt first became a business partner, then a buyer of the house, which he converted in 1907 into a stock corporation with 2.5 million francs in capital, Magazines zum Globus AG , and at the same time changed the name of the department store to what it is today. This is considered the year the globe was born .

Globi

For the 25th anniversary of Globus in 1932, the then advertising manager Ignatius Karl Schiele and the draftsman Robert Lips created the figure “ Globi ” for Globus' children's advertising . The Globus subsidiary “Globi Verlag AG” was founded for the popular figure in 1944 and has since published the books and markets what is now the most successful Swiss children's book figure. Globi-Verlag remained a group company even after 1997, until the restructuring of the Globus group that was initiated in 2006.

From Papierwerd to Bahnhofstrasse

"Globus provisional" used by Globus until 1967, later the Zurich Food Association (LVZ), which is now part of the Coop.

After the Second World War, Globus moved into the vacant Pestalozzi schoolhouse between Bahnhofstrasse and Löwenplatz in order to build a new headquarters on the Papierwerd. The corresponding construction project was rejected in a city referendum in 1951. Since the new location on Bahnhofstrasse turned out to be extremely good, the Zurich architect Karl Egender built the so-called Globus provisional facility on the Papierwerd area on the Limmat , in which the department store was housed during the demolition of the old school building and the new construction of the current department store. The city of Zurich was able to acquire the former school premises in exchange for the Papierwerd-Insel, and they moved into the new building in 1967.

The vacant temporary solution was in the limelight in 1968 in connection with the Zurich youth riots, the so-called globe riot. The provisional solution at that time is still standing today, has been renovated several times and has meanwhile become a candidate for a monument itself, because the light-looking building today represents far more than the luxurious prestige main store of the Globus department store on Pestalozzi-Wiese, the ideas of the Second Swiss Modernism whose well-known protagonist was undoubtedly Karl Egender. The striking, two-story building in a prime pedestrian location in front of Zurich's main train station is used by the second largest Swiss retailer, Coop, and the Zurich city police .

Au Bon Marché

In 1956 Globus launched the Au Bon Marché (ABM) discount department store , which had around 60 locations in the 1980s. After numerous wrong entrepreneurial decisions and reorganizations, the ABM department stores of the Globus Group brought heavy financial losses in the 1990s, which led to the abandonment of the second department store chain in 2001.

National expansion

Globus took over twelve department stores from its toughest competitor Jelmoli in 1996, including the well-known Grand Passage in Geneva (founded in 1907), Innovation in Lausanne , Aux Armourins in Neuchâtel (founded in 1920, closed in autumn 2011), Jelmoli in Lucerne and in the Glattzentrum as well as Innovazione in Locarno including staff.

As a replacement for the ABM department stores, the Globus group acted as a franchisee for Oviesse (trendy fashion). The ABM branches were converted into Oviesse branches, to which Nannini cafés and Estorel drugstores were usually attached, as the new concept did not occupy the entire area of the former ABM branches. By the end of 2004, the Oviesse branches and the Nannini cafés were closed again.

Sale to Migros

In June 1997, the owner family sold the magazine zum Globus to Migros for around 700 million francs . The Globus Group continued this as an independent company until the end of 2006. On January 1, 2007, Migros dissolved the group structure of the Globus Group. The individual companies of the former Globus Group have since been run as independent companies within the Migros Group. Also on January 1, 2007 Globi-Verlag was sold to Orell Füssli .

In June 2019, CEO Fabrice Zumbrunnen announced that Migros would exit the unprofitable department store business and sell its stake.

expansion

In October 2013, Globus and the Lucerne fashion chain Schild AG announced that the previous Schild shareholders (Stefan Portmann and Thomas Herbert each 27%, EGS Beteiligungen AG as a subsidiary of the Ernst Göhner Foundation 42% and Schild management 4%) ) to be sold to Globus and in return Portmann and Herbert invested a double-digit million amount in Globus. Schild will continue to operate as an independent group within the entire company, which will become the Swiss market leader in the medium and upscale fashion segment with sales of around one billion francs. In May 2017, Migros announced that the fashion chain Schild would disappear by 2019; all stores will be integrated into the globe.

At the end of August 2018, Globus announced the takeover of Navyboot on January 1, 2019. Globus takes over a large part of the sales points; the rest will continue to be operated by the Gaydoul Group . The previous General Merchandise Manager of Globus, Reto Braegger, was given overall management of the Navyboot brand on October 1, 2019. At the same time, Franco Savastano, former CEO of Jelmoli , took over his position as General Merchandise Manager.

Takeover by Signa and Central Group

In June 2019, Migros announced that it wanted to sell the luxury brand Magazine zum Globus AG. On February 4, 2020 it was announced that a joint venture between Central Group and Signa Holding would take over Globus. The transaction was completed in May 2020.

Sale of specialty shops

The 31 specialty stores of the Globus Group, i.e. the former branches of Schild and Herren-Globus as well as the Navyboot branches, will be opened on February 1, 2021 by the former Globus boss Thomas Herbert together with the couple Silvia and Fredy Bayard ( Mode Bayard ) accepted.
