Digitec Galaxus AG is the largest online retailer in Switzerland . The Swiss company, which is 70% owned by Migros , operates the two online shops Digitec and Galaxus as well as eleven digitec branches in German- and French-speaking Switzerland .

Digitec Galaxus AG achieved sales of 1.146 billion francs in 2019 (2018: 992 million francs, 2017: 861 million francs, 2016: 725 million francs).

range

The online department store Galaxus offers the full range of Digitec Galaxus AG, Digitec specializes in electronics. Galaxus offers the categories “Household”, “Living”, “Do-It + Garden”, “Sports”, “Fashion”, “Toys”, “Pet Supplies”, “Baby + Mama”, “Beauty + Health”, “Erotic” , “Watches + Jewelry”, “Office”, “Digital” and “Media” (as of May 2019). In total, there were more than 1.5 million products in the range as of March 2018. Since the end of May 2019, cars have also been offered for sale and for rent. In July 2019, Digitec Galaxus entered the Swiss mobile communications market with its own mobile phone subscription .

As part of a marketplace model , external retailers have also been offering their products via Galaxus since October 2016, such as the Migros subsidiary Magazine zum Globus or the pet supplies retailer Qualipet .

Branches and pick-up facilities

Digitec Galaxus AG has eleven digitec branches, which are located in Basel , Bern , Dietikon , Geneva , Kriens , Langendorf , Lausanne , St. Gallen , Winterthur , Wohlen and Zurich . These shops serve as showrooms, as sales, advice and collection points as well as return locations, e.g. B. in warranty cases. Digitec Galaxus is therefore not a pure online retailer. In the industry, one speaks of a multichannel or omnichannel strategy.

The Migros pick-up service PickMup , with its several hundred locations, is also available to Digitec and Galaxus customers. On November 21, 2019, the first digitec branch opened in Langendorf in a Migros shopping center.

Logistics and shipping

Digitec Galaxus operates its own warehouse in Wohlen in Aargau on the site of the former Ferrowohlen steelworks . This building was expanded for the last time in September 2017 and in the course of this it was partially automated. The warehouse is now 46,500 square meters. There is space for up to 1.5 million items on over 100 kilometers of shelves. More than 300 employees work in logistics (as of September 2017). A new, fully automated small parts warehouse is expected to go into operation in Wohlen at the end of April 2020 .

Digitec Galaxus works together with the Swiss Post for shipping , the products are delivered to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. A new dispatch center is to be built on the former site of the Utzenstorf paper mill by 2024.

The following applies to the products in stock in our own warehouse: All orders received by 5 p.m. (Monday to Friday) are dispatched on the same day and generally arrive at the delivery address on the morning of the next day (except on Sundays). The availability of each product can be seen in real time. Same-day delivery was introduced in the city of Zurich at the end of January 2020 .

history

Digitec was founded in April 2001 by the three young entrepreneurs Oliver Nägeli (today Oliver Herren), Florian Teuteberg and Marcel Dobler under the name Nägeli Trading & Co. in the form of a general partnership . On June 13, 2005 the general partnership was converted into a stock corporation , the company then operated under the name Digitec AG until 2014 ( original spelling : digitec AG with a lowercase d). In May 2012, Digitec AG switched on the Galaxus online shop, which also offers other areas apart from electronics. The company reacted to the dwindling margins and low market growth in the electronics trade and expanded its range to include items for everyday use. In June 2012, Migros acquired a 30% stake in Digitec for an estimated 42 million francs; since 2015, Migros has been the majority shareholder in Galaxus AG with a 70% stake.

In August 2014, a relaunch of the website, which previously went through a public test phase as Digitec Beta, went online. The underlying ERP is an in-house development. Previously, a heavily modified Access database regulated the goods management, but this reached its limits due to the strong growth. On September 2, 2014, Digitec AG changed its name to Galaxus (Schweiz) AG and then to Digitec Galaxus AG on July 28, 2015, in order to illustrate the affiliation of the two brands digitec and Galaxus . Digitec Galaxus has been the first Swiss online retailer to use gamification since April 2017 . In August 2017, Digitec Galaxus extended the right of return from 14 to 30 days. In September 2017, Digitec Galaxus completed the expansion of its warehouse.

In November 2017 it became known that customer data was stolen in a data breach. The potentially affected data are name, gender, telephone number, postal address and email address. Digitec customer data from 2001 to mid-2014 at the latest are potentially affected. Certainly, no credit card information has been tapped and it is also assumed that no login passwords have leaked out. It is unclear whether the data was stolen from Digitec itself or from one or more suppliers, affiliated dealers or service centers. Because these partners need the personal data mentioned for their services, they are also possible sources. The fact that only around 50 people affected reported to the company that it was not Digitec itself that was responsible for the leak.

In November 2017, the company launched a re-commerce feature: customers can now offer the products they bought from Digitec Galaxus for sale again on Digitec Galaxus. Around 24,000 products from Globus have been offered on Galaxus.ch since January 2018 . With the new Globus department, Galaxus has exceeded the limit of one million products for the first time. At the end of April 2018, an EU hub was put into operation in Weil am Rhein . The international mail is now collected and customs cleared there fully automatically before being handed over to Swiss Post for delivery .

The online shop galaxus.de was opened on November 1st, 2018. As early as 2017, the company announced plans to expand to Germany with Galaxus. With this step, the company also wants to secure access to the “ digital single market ”. It has chosen the Fichtenhain campus in Krefeld - Fischeln as the German logistics location. As of December 2018, around 40,000 items are already on offer. If Digitec Galaxus is successful in Germany, the company wants to expand into other countries. Möbel Pfister has also been represented with part of the range on Galaxus.ch since November 2018 . On March 19, 2019, Digitec Galaxus announced that it is now possible to pay with crypto currencies in the two online shops digitec.ch and galaxus.ch .
