Fischeln is the southernmost district of Krefeld . It extends over almost 19 km² and with 26,216 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2016) is the most populous district behind the city center . Fischeln is divided into the areas Fischeln, Stahldorf and Königshof and the statistical districts Stahldorf, Königshof-West, Königshof, Niederbruch, Fischeln-Ost and Fischeln-West.

history

Traces from the Stone Age have been found in the Fischeln area. A clay and a glass vessel are evidence of an early medieval burial ground from the 7th century AD.

A parish church is mentioned for the first time in 943. From 1392 to 1794 Fischeln belonged to the Electoral Cologne Office of Linn . The textile industry spreading from Krefeld, especially silk weaving, resulted in ever stronger ties with the neighboring city in the course of the 19th century, which were reinforced by the construction of a steam tram in 1883. During the 19th century the population increased tenfold.

Although there were other important industrial companies in addition to the silk weaving mills, in particular the “Krefeld” steelworks ( ThyssenKrupp AG ), which is located in Fischeln, the mayor of Fischeln, which was independent at the time, wanted to move into the city of Krefeld to be incorporated. An unsolved problem was the lack of sewerage and drinking water supply.

In 1929 Fischeln became part of the city of Krefeld with several other communities and then part of the Krefeld-Uerdingen am Rhein district . Fischeln received 350,000 marks for this.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the population of the Fischeln district continued to grow strongly due to the development of new residential areas. New building areas are still emerging today, such as “Am Wetscheshof” south of the Kütterweg in the direction of Osterath . Fischeln has already extended its building limits to the A 44 motorway, including with the Fichtenhain campus . Further new development areas (Hanninxweg) are planned.

religion

The catholic parish church Sankt Clemens in the village center

Since the entire area of today's Fischeln district was Electoral Cologne , the majority of the population is still Catholic today . Fischeln has belonged to this diocese since the re-establishment of the diocese of Aachen in 1930 through the Prussian Concordat concluded between the Holy See and the Free State of Prussia in 1929 . The Catholic parish church Sankt Clemens is the spiritual center of the parish Maria Frieden (with the parishes Sankt Clemens in the center of Fischeln, Herz Jesu in Königshof, Sankt Bonifatius in Stahldorf as well as Sankt Johann Baptist and Sankt Martin in the northern district of Krefeld-Süd) and also since Community of the communities of Krefeld-Süd existing at the beginning of 2007 . This includes the four other parishes Holy Guardian Angel and Saint Karl Borromeo in Oppum , Visitation of Mary (Maria Waldrast) in Forstwald and Saint Michael in Lindental .

The Protestant Christians in Fischeln belong to the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland ( Krefeld - Viersen church district ). The Markus district comprising Fischeln (with the Markuskirche on Kölner Straße as the spiritual center) is the southern part of the Evangelical Church Community Krefeld-Süd . The northern part of this parish is the Luther district with the Luther Church in the Krefeld-Süd district as the center.

There is a New Apostolic Church on Anrather Strasse in the east of Fischeln . This is the seat of one of twelve parishes in the Krefeld church district of the New Apostolic Church of North Rhine-Westphalia , a corporation under public law.

The Yunus Emre Mosque is in the Stahldorf an der Obergath district. It is the only mosque in Fischeln and stands out due to its unique look made of glass and steel elements.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a parish hall in the Königshof an der Untergath district.

Culture and sights

Persiluhr Kölner Strasse at Fischeln City Park

A social highlight is the shooting festival held every odd year of the Fischelner Bürger-Schützen-Gesellschaft, founded in 1451. A weekly market takes place every Thursday on Marienplatz in the center of Fischeln. A cultural institution is the Theater am Marienplatz (TAM), a small but well-known theater beyond the borders of Krefeld. Another highlight, the so-called Fischeln Open , is an annual Sunday shopping on Kölner Strasse.

The bell tower of the parish church of St. Clemens dates from 1170. The Fischeln town hall is located on the corner of Kölner Strasse and Hafelsstrasse. The Diebershof and the old K-Bahn station on the Hees are also worth seeing. The Fischelner Bruch offers recreational opportunities and wide views towards the former arms of the Old Rhine. The Fischeln city park between Oberschlesienstrasse, Anrather Strasse and Kölner Strasse extends over 100 hectares. There is also the Stadtbad Fischeln, an indoor pool with two swimming pools, a non-swimmer pool and 200 square meters of outdoor sunbathing area.

Public facilities

The Fischeln town hall in June 2009 (before the renovation)

The town hall of the former Fischeln community now serves as the seat of today's Krefeld district of Fischeln and thus also as the administrative branch of the city of Krefeld. A police station is also housed in the former town hall and is only manned during the day.

In 1877 Fischeln got a volunteer fire brigade . In 1946 the two locations in Stahldorf and in the Fischeln center on today's market square next to the Marienschule were closed, but were re-established in 1984 by a citizens' initiative. The current location is on Kölner Strasse. On behalf of the fire brigade, an ambulance has been operated by the Malteser Emergency Service since 2009 . The vehicle was stationed at a rescue station on Kölner Straße. After this guard had become too small for the latest generation of the ambulance, it was temporarily stationed on the premises of the Malteser emergency service on the Obergath. A new joint fire and rescue station is planned for 2018 at the earliest. This should be on Erkelenzerstraße near the city park.

There are two youth centers in Fischeln and Stahlnetz for youth work . The Saassenhof retirement home is a facility for senior care .
