From 1560 Count Hermann von Moers introduced the Augsburg Confession (Reformed Church) in his county - including Krefeld - the church was handed over to the Reformation in 1607. In 1584 the church burned down, after a renovation, services can be held again in 1599. In 1747, several inscription panels were integrated into the north wall, and from 1840 to 1842 a Gothic hall church was added to the old tower - according to the plans of the architect Heinrich Johann Freyse . On June 22, 1942, the nave was destroyed by a bomb attack. The Gothic tower collapsed on April 14, 1951, on December 14, 1952 the old church, rebuilt according to the plans of Paul H. The services were held as "forest services", but the Third Reich banned these gatherings in 1940. After the Second World War, the first church services took place in a room in the school barracks in November 1945, and in December 1948 a disused barrack belonging to the Todt Organization was bought as a chapel. This emergency church was solemnly consecrated in September 1949. In the mid-1950s it was decided to build a new church, which was then built according to the plans of the architect H. Scharnofske. The Krefeld artist Gustav Fünders was commissioned to design the glass facade and the mosaic (vision of the seer Johannes) over the entrance door. In 1961 the new Protestant church - with the name "Johanneskirche" - was consecrated by Joachim Beckmann (President of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland) and Wilhelm Veit (Superintendent of the Krefeld church district). When the new Catholic church in Forstwald ( St. Mary's Visitation (Maria Waldrast) ) was built between 1970 and 1971 , the St. John's Church was also made available to Catholic Christians, which led to a natural ecumenical cooperation between the two parishes ( which still exists).

First mentioned in 1166 as the St. Dionysius Chapel, this was the only church in Krefeld for centuries. In the 15th century, St. Dionysius was rebuilt as a three-nave hall church in the late Gothic style. It was handed over to the Reformation in 1607 - now the "Old Church" . The construction of the new Dionysius Church in baroque form did not begin until 1752, the nave was completed in 1754, the tower only completed in 1768, and Ernst Friedrich Zwirner is named as the architect . In the renovation phase from 1840–1844 by the church builder Heinrich Johann Freyse , the church was given its present-day appearance. In 1893/1894 the new, almost 80-meter-high tower with a portal facade in neo-Gothic shapes was added. The church was badly damaged in the Second World War, only the tower remained intact, and in 1954 it was completely restored. The spire fell victim to a storm in 2004 and was replaced in 2010.

A church building association was founded in 1903, and the first services were held in rented halls. After a plan from 1913 (by Eduard Endler ) was not carried out, an architecture competition was announced in 1929 , which the Elberfeld architect August Schumacher won. The steel frame building was erected in 1930 and 1931, and the church was consecrated on July 5, 1931. Initially, the Sacred Heart of Jesus was a branch church of St. Gertrudis , on April 1, 1935, it was raised to an independent parish. The church was badly hit in a bomb attack on December 18, 1944, and from 1949 the basement could be used as an emergency church. On December 20, 1953 - after the final reconstruction - the church was handed over to its intended purpose. The free-standing bell tower - according to the plans of the architects Fritz Dohmen and Franz Gotzen - was only built between 1965 and 1966 (at the location planned by August Schumacher) (for reasons of cost). In 1975 - as part of a renovation - a celebration altar was built in the middle of the church.

The congregation became independent in 1938. In a bomb attack in 1943, the premises of the Krefeld community were destroyed; after “building hours” in private rooms, they found shelter in a room in the Krahnen und Gobbers weaving mill in 1945. The newly built church at Hardenbergstrasse 115 was consecrated on April 16, 1950. The church was sold in 2011 and is now privately owned. As in many parts of Germany , it was the Kaiserswerth deaconesses who, together with women from the “ Friends of Young Girls ” association, warned the girls and young women traveling from the countryside to Krefeld about the dangers of urban life and, if necessary, gave them accommodation in the Mariannenstift or to help with the job search. After the First World War , the station mission was continued by the “ Evangelical Women's Aid ” and the “ Catholic Women's Association ” as a permanent contact point in the station. From 1927 the Christian organizations were founded by the “Israelitische Frauenverein e. V. ”(later“ Jüdische Bahnhofshilfe ”), for this purpose the Reichsbahn provided a discarded railway wagon on track 1a. After the seizure of power of the Nazis , the work had to be stopped, until mid-1945 could record the activity again the aforementioned Christian organizations. In 1959, it was possible to move into a new building on what was then track 1a of the main train station. From 1991 the station mission was only operated by the "Evangelical Community Association of Krefeld"; between 2005 and 2007 operations had to be temporarily suspended. Today's sponsor is the "Diakonie Krefeld & Viersen", in the building on platform 1 (Protestant) services take place at irregular intervals.

On the night of June 21-22, 1943, it was destroyed by an air raid, and the community was able to stay in Steinstrasse 147 until the motherhouse was rebuilt on Jungfernweg. Once the order was active in home and nursing as well as in many other social tasks, the sisters can u. a. no longer pursue these tasks for reasons of age. The house now serves as a conference and educational center, place for church services, prayer time, meditation and reflection and is open to all disadvantaged people in our society. In 2005, the first foundation stone for the new synagogue was laid - according to the plans of the Meerbusch architects Dirk Jost and Klaus Reymann - and it was officially opened on September 14, 2008. During the November pogroms of 1938 it was not possible to set fire to it (for structural reasons), so the interior of the building including the cult objects was cleared and piled into a stake on the Uerdingen market square and set on fire. The synagogue building was later covered and the foundation walls torn down. A bronze plate has been a reminder of the former synagogue since 1988.
