Forstwald is a district of Krefeld with 3,516 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).

history

The area originally belonged to the area of the former municipality of Vorst , which in turn has been a district of today's neighboring town of Tönisvorst since 1970 , and who sold it to the Krefeld merchant Gerhard Schumacher at the time. Schumacher had this part of the St. Töniser Heide afforested with pine trees. This first afforestation was destroyed by a forest fire. The second reforestation with the network of trails that still exist today was permanent. In 1929 this 220 hectare area was incorporated into Krefeld. Forstwald is considered one of the best residential areas in Krefeld.

The battle of the Hückelsmay on June 23, 1758 during the Seven Years' War , which took place at the Landwehr in the forest, is well known. The trenches of the Landwehr can still be found in the forest, originally dug in the 14th century to seal off the Electoral Cologne offices of Linn and Kempen. Located in the extreme southwest of the city of Krefeld , Forstwald borders the Fischeln district in the east and the Benrad-Süd district in the northeast . Furthermore, Forstwald borders the district of Viersen : to the west and northwest to the city of Tönisvorst and to the south to the city of Willich .

Parts of the former barracks (Francisca Barracks) of the British Army of the Rhine, which were used by the 28th (BR) Signal Regiment and 13 (BE) Cie TTr. were used, lie in the forest area. A smaller part - about a third - is in the area of the neighboring town of Tönisvorst. The barracks were closed in 2002. During the refugee crisis in 2015, consideration was given to converting parts of the barracks into accommodation. However, after the appropriate utilization and construction of lightweight halls, the accommodations were never used to accommodate refugees. The buildings have now been dismantled again.
