Gartenstadt is one of the 19 districts of Krefeld , consisting of the two statistical districts Gartenstadt and Elfrath , which are separated by the Charlottenring .

Gartenstadt lies in a north-easterly direction from the center of Krefeld and is bounded to the west by the A 57 with the “Gartenstadt” motorway exit.

The name is derived from the garden city movement; The Krefeld garden city was also planned as a suburb in the countryside.

Gartenstadt settlement

In a narrower sense, Gartenstadt is used to describe the statistical district Gartenstadt located south of the Charlottenring . This consists of one after World War II , founded the settlement and has been in the field of districts Uerdingen , Traar and Verberg built approximately where was located from 1915 to 1945, the old Krefeld airfield. The development of the former airfield area began in 1953.

The airport memorial stone was donated in 1991 by the Garden City Citizens' Association. The boulder was exposed when the Elfrather See was being dredged. The plaque was created by the sculptor Marianne Kiesselbach and shows the entrance gate of the former airfield.
